Studies on Morpho-physiological Characters Contributing to Yield Potential of Rice Lines/varieties in Aman Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at BINA farm, Mymensingh with nine rice genotypes during July to December 1991 to evaluate to evaluate their morpho-physiological and architectural characters contributing to yield over their parents. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Eight hills from each plot were uprooted at different physiological stages viz. tillering, panicle initiation, flowering and milk dough stages to collect data on leaf area and total dry matter (TDM) per hill. Physiological parameters like crop growth rate (CGR) and net assimilation rate (NAR) were calculated from mean values of TDM and leaf area. At maturity, 16 hills were uprooted randomly at (2 x 2) hills basis from each plot for yield components and total dry matter. Yield was taken from 3m² area harvested from each plot. Data were analyzed statistically and means were evaluated by LSD. On the assessment of morphological characters, yield attributes, yield, CGR and NAR values, none of the hybrid lines showed any improvement in these characters over their better parents.

Objectives:

Objective of the study was to evaluate rice lines/varieties for their improvement in some morpho-physiological and architectural characters contributing to yield over their parents

Methodology:

Five hybrid lines BINA-6-84-4-115 and BINA-6-84-3-101 (BR x Iratom-24), BINA-6-84-5-6 (Iratoim-24 x BR4), BINA-10-4-10 (Binasail x BR4) and BINA-14-10-10 (Iratom-24 x Pajam) were evaluated against their parents for aman season and a standard check variety BR11 for variation in yield contributing attributes and earliness. The experiment was conducted during the aman season of 1991 at BINA farm, Mymensingh. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. One seedling of 43 days old were planted per hill on August 15, 1991 with a spacing 20 cm x 15 cm. The individual plot size was 5 m x 2 m. The fertilizers were applied @ N70, P₂O₅ 30, K₂O 30, S 10 Kg per ha. Eight hills from each plot were uprooted at different physiological stages viz. tillering, panicle initiation, flowering and milk dough stages to collect data on leaf area and total dry matter (TDM) per hill. Physiological parameters like CGR and NAR were calculated from mean values of TDM and leaf area. At maturity, 16 hills were uprooted randomly at (2 x 2) hills basis from each plot for yield components and total dry matter. Yield was taken from 3m² area harvested from each plot. Data were analyzed statistically and means were evaluated by LSD.
