Effect of Photoperiod and Temperature on Flowering of Jute

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two experiments were conducted at BINA, Mymensingh with jute during August 1991 to June 1992. A preliminary study on the flowering behavior of jute in relation to photoperiod and temperature effect was designed to single out the effect of photoperiod and temperature. The first experiment sown on 12 August, 1991 showed more or less similar days (40-42 days) to first flowering in 11.5 and 12 hours continuous day lengths, but in natural condition, it took 50 days to 1st flowering. Seeds of the second experiment sown on 12 April, 1992 revealed that plant given 12 hours and 13 hours day lengths flowered in 52 and 75 days respectively, whereas in natural condition, plants flowered in 127 days. The results of both the experiments indicated that the plants experienced 12 hours or less day lengths showed earlier flowering.

Methodology:

Two experiments were conducted at BINA, Mymensingh with jute during August 1991 to June 1992. Two experiment were conducted in pot culture conditions with different day lengths. The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design with three replications. The day length was maintained either by keeping in natural day condition or by transferring the pots in dark room for shortening and in growth chamber by artificial light for extending the day lengths. The first experiment sown on 12 August, 1991 showed more or less similar days (40-42 days) to first flowering in 11.5 and 12 hours continuous day lengths, but in natural condition, it took 50 days to 1st flowering. Seeds of the second experiment sown on 12 April, 1992 revealed that plant given 12 hours and 13 hours day lengths flowered in 52 and 75 days respectively, whereas in natural condition, plants flowered in 127 days. The results of both the experiments indicated that the plants experienced 12 hours or less day lengths showed earlier flowering.
