Genotypic Differences in Root Cation-exchange Capacity of Rice Mutants/lines

Objectives:

Objective of the study was to find out status of root cation exchange capacity (CEC) of some elite genotypes of rice and relationship between root CEC and dry matter accumulation.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at BINA, Mymensingh during July to December 1991 with five rice mutants/lines viz. BINA-6-84-3-101, BINA-6-84-4-115, BINA-6-84-5-6, BINA-5-153-8-163 and BINA-5-153-10-28 along with three checks (Binasail, Nizersail and BR11). PVC pots containing 4 kg sands were arranged in a completely randomized design with thee replications. In a pot, two healthy 20 day old seedlings of rice genotypes were transplanted. Crops were harvested at maximum tillering and panicle initiation stages. The roots and shoots were collected separately. Roots were washed with demineralized water and dried in the oven at 80^oC for forty eight hours. These were then ground to pass through 0.7 to 1.0 mm sieve. The CEC of the roots were determined according to the method described as follows: 0.2 g sample was taken in a beaker and to it 200 ml 0.01 N HCl was added. Then this was stirred for 5 minutes and filtered. The residue on the filter paper was washed with distilled water for several times. The root minerals were taken in another beaker and to it 200 ml 1M KCl was adjusted to pH 7.0 by 0.01 N KOH. CEC values were calculated from the differences in the tire between the solution with and without roots. CEC was expressed as meq/100 g dry roots. Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, K⁺ and Na⁺ contents in shoots were determined from di-acid digests by the atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Data were analyzed statistically and mean values were adjudged by LSD.

Achievement/Findings:

Positive correlations between CEC and dry matter accumulation suggested that rice genotypes might be screened on the basis of CEC alone at maximum tillering or panicle initiation stage for maximum potential of growth and cation uptake.
