Studies of Morpho-physiological Chararecters Contributing to Yield Potential of Rice Hybrid Lines/varieties in Aman Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at BINA farm, Mymensingh with three hybrid lines viz. BINA-5-153-8-163, BINA-5-153-7-14, BINA-5-153-10-28 along with their parents BR4 and Iratom-24 during July to December 1990. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. The seedlings were transplanted on August 5, 1990. The variety BR4, Iratom-24, hybrid line BINA-5-153-7-14 increased leaf area progressively with growth period and attained maximum leaf area/hill at 62 DAT; but the line BINA-5-153-10-28 increased leaf area progressively up to 51 DAT and the line BINA-5-153-8-163 increased leaf area up to 69 DAT. After the period of progressive increase leaf area declined slowly except in BINA-5-153-8-163 and BR4 which maintained up to 76 DAT. BR4 produced the highest TDM and Iratom produced the least. The lines/varieties having higher TDM also contributed to higher panicle weight and grain yield. Higher NAR value were observed in the hybrid lines BINA-5-153-8-163, BINA-5-153-7-14 compared to mother varieties but CGR did not show such trend. Panicle length and plant height showed a small increase in the hybrid lines.

Objectives:

Objective of the study was to find out morpho-physiological characters contributing to yield of rice lines over their parents

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at BINA farm, Mymensingh with three hybrid lines viz. BINA-5-153-8-163, BINA-5-153-7-14, BINA-5-153-10-28 along with their parents BR4 and Iratom-24 during July to December 1990. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. The seedlings were transplanted on August 5, 1990. The plot size was 5 m x 1 m. The spacing was 15 cm x 20 cm. One seedling was planted per hill. Six hills from each plot were harvested at regular intervals up to 83 days after transplanting (DAT) to collect data on plant height, leaf area, number of tillers, number of leaves, total dry matter (TDM) per hill. Physiological parameters like CGR and NAR were calculated from the mean data of leaf area and total dry matter. At maturity, 10 hills were harvested randomly from each plot for the total dry matter, panicles weight and 33 hills were harvested for yield and yield components. The values were analyzed statistically and LSD values were used to compare the means.

Hybrid lines of rice did not possess remarkable physiological traits in comparison to their mother varieties and mostly showed intermediate quantitative characters.
