Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at BINA farm, Mymensingh with four somaclonal lines (P₃, P₇, P₈ and P₉) along with their mother BR5 during August to December 1990. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The somaclonal line P₃ showed the highest plant height. Panicle length of all the somaclonal lines increased spectacularly and number of grains per panicle were also increased to a great extent but number of panicles per hill were not increased. Although yield of somaclonal lines increased due to increased number of grains per panicle, but these line did not show better translocation. NAR did not increase in somaclonal lines but CGR increased to a certain extend due to increase in leaf area.

Objectives:

Objective of the study was to study morpho-physiological characters contributing to yield of somaclonal lines along with their mother

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at BINA farm, Mymensingh with four somaclonal lines (P₃, P₇, P₈ and P₉) along with their mother BR5 during August to December 1990. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The plot size and spacing were 5 m x 1 m and 20 cm x 15 cm respectively. One seedling was planted per hill. Six hills from each plot were harvested at regular intervals up to 83 days after transplanting (DAT) to collect data on plant height, leaf area per hill, total dry matter (TDM) per hill. Physiological parameters like CGR (Crop growth rate) and NAR (Net assimilation rate) were calculated from the mean value of leaf area and TDM. At maturity, 10 hills were harvested randomly from each plot for the total dry matter, panicle weight and 33 hills were harvested for yield component. Data were analyzed statistically and LSD values were used to compare the means.
