An experiment was carried out at the Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati hill district to find out the most suitable spacing (50 cm x 15 cm, 50 cm x 20 cm, and 50 cm x 25 cm) of ginger in intercorpping with country bean and yard long been. The result showed, highest ginger yield of 12.86 and 13.60 t/ha was obtained from ginger spacing of 50 cm x 15 cm with yard long bean in 1991-92 and 1992-93, respectively. In the case of legumes, country bean and yard long bean yield showed highest in their respective sole crops. The result also revealed that highest ginger equivalent yield (16.65 and 16.57 t/ha), LER (1.99 and 1.98), gross return (av. Tk 249100/ha) and net return (av. Tk , 187800/ha) was obtained from ginger spacing of 50 cm x 15 cm intercropped with-country bean. But benefit cost ratio is less due to involvement of higher ginger seed cost. Higher benefit cost ratio was obtained when ginger was intercropped with legumes at wider spacing. Country bean was found better  than yard long bean as intercropped with ginger.

To find out the apppriate spacing of ginger in ginger-legumes intercroping system in the hilly region of Bangladesh.

The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali in the hilly region during 1991-92 and 1992-93 under rainfed condition. The soil of the experimental area was silty loam having a pH 6.7. The treatments consisted of three plant spacings of ginger (15, 20, and 25 cm) with a constant row spacings of 50 cm. Country bean and yard long bean (YLB) were sown in different spacings of ginger (var. local). Monoculture of ginger spacing 50 cm x 15 cm was maintained. Two pits of country bean were accommodated in each plot both in sole and intercrop. After every two rows of ginger, YLB was sown in single row maintaining 25 cm plant to plant distance. Spacing of 100 cm x 25 cm was given for sole YLB. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Unit plot size was 3m x 3m. Manures and fertilizers were applied @ 15 tons of cowdung and 90-72-120 kg N, P2O5; and K2O/ha, respectively, both in sole ginger and intercrop combinations. Whole amount of cowdung and phosphorous were applied during final land preparation and nitrogen and potassium were applied as top-dressing in two splits at 35 and 60 DAP (days after planting). In the case of sole legumes, 10 tons of cowdung and 23-48-90 kg N, P2O5, and K20/ha were applied during final land preparation as basal. Rhizomes of ginger were planted on late April and seeds of country bean and YLB were sown on mid-July. Country bean was allowed to climb on bamboo support and YLB on bamboo sticks. Earthing up and weedings were done twice at 35 and 60 DAP both in sole ginger and intercrop situations. Beans were infested by aphids, and malathion was sprayed to control. The marketable pods bean were harvested time to time. Ten plants of ginger were selected randomly and morphological and yield contributing characters were recorded. But the marketable fresh yield of rhizome was recorded from whole plot basis. The crop duration for ginger was around 265 days. Land equivalent ratio (LER) values were computed according. Cost and benefit analysis was done for each treatment on a hectare basis taking into account the market value of each crop.

The highest benefit cost ratio (4.76) was obatained from ginger with wider spacing when intercropped with country bean. Intercropping of ginger both with country bean and YLB in different spacings showed higher benefit cost ratio than sole cropping. The lowest benefit cost ratio was recorded from sole YLB. Though highest net return was obtained from closer spacing in itercropping situation, its benefit cost ratio was lower than wider spacing. This reduction was due to higher involvement of ginger seed cost. So, farmers of hilly region should be motivated to grow ginger at wider spacing (50 cm x 25 cm) intercropped with country bean or yard long bean instead of monoculture of ginger
