Field Performance of Sweet Potato Varieties in Saline Zone of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Six released sweet potato varieties (BARI SP 4, BARI SP 6, BARI SP 7, BARI SP 8, BARI SP 12 & BARI SP 13) with a local cultivar (as check variety) were evaluated in two saline zones like Satkhira and Kuakata of Patuakhali for their performance during 2014-15 crop seasons. All the varieties under study performed better in the salinity level of 1.02-9.20 dS/m at Satkhira and 1.37-12.37 dS/m at Kuakata, Patuakhali. Comprising both the location, BARA SP-12 gave the highest yield (33.57 t/ha) followed by BARI SP-6 (31.29 t/ha) & BARI SP-4 (29.46 t/ha) while the lowest yield was recorded in BARI SP-13 (17.71 t/ha) followed by BARI SP-7 (23.64 t/ha). Considering the average yield performance of both locations BARI released sweet potato varieties like BARI SP-4, BARI SP-6 and BARI SP-12 performed better than local check variety up to 12.37 dS/m soil salinity level. However, among the varieties under study BARI SP-12 and BARI SP-13 produced higher dry matter content in the tuberous roots than the other tested varieties. Considering the root yield with higher root dry matter, BARI SP-12 found the most suited variety for both the saline zones.

Objectives:

To find out suitable sweet potato varieties for growing in saline areas of Bangladesh

Methodology:

The present experiment was carried out at Agriculture Research Station, BARI, Satkhira and On Farm Research Division, BARI, Kuakata, Patuakhali during the 2014-2015 cropping season. Six released sweet potato varieties like BARI SP 4, BARI SP 6, BARI SP 7, BARI SP 8, BARI SP 12 & BARI SP 13 along with a local cultivar as check were included in this study. Vines were planted on 11th November and 22nd November, 2014 at ARS, Satkhira and Kuakata, Patuakhali having plot size of 3.0 m x 3.0 m with 3 replication following RCBD. Fertilizers were applied in the experimental plots at the rate of 70-25-90-15- 2-2 kg/ha of N-P-K-S-B-Zn as a source of Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum, Boric Acid, Zinc Sulphate, respectively. Weeding, irrigation, earthing-up and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The sweet potato was harvested on 23rd March and 28th March, 2015 at ARS, Satkhira and Kuakata, Patuakhali respectively. Physio-morphological characteristics of sweet potato roots of experimented varieties are presented in Table 1.

All the yield and yield contributing characters data were recorded and were analyzed statistically. Plant vigor and senescence was measured on 1-5 scale, where 1 is very poor vigor and 5 is highly vigorous and for senescence 5 is fully green & 1 is highly senescence. The level of soil salinity was measured on fifteen days from date of planting to harvesting of sweet potato and it was ranged from 1.02 to 9.20 dS/m in Satkhira and 1.37 to 12.37 dS/m in Patuakhali. Higher level of salinity was recorded in Kuakata, Patuakhali compare to Satkhira. Weather data was recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

This experiment revealed that BARI SP-4, BARI SP-6, BARI SP-8 and BARI SP-12 performed better at Satkhira up to 9.0 dS/m. But at Patuakhali, BARI SP-12 and BARI SP-6 performed better in a salinity level up to 12 dS/m. Considering dry matter content and root yield, BARI SP-12 suited for both saline areas of Bangladesh.
