Impact of Insecticides & Organic Oil Spray on the Growth and Yield of Tomato Under Tylcv Infected Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study aimed to evaluate the effect of three different insecticides namely Admire (0.1%), Cymbush (0.1%), Nymbicidine (0.1%) and an organic oil Soybean (0.1%) on the growth and yield of tomato plants due to Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) infection in the field. Data were collected on selected growth (Plant height, fresh shoot weight, dry shoot weight, root length, fresh root weight and dry root weight) and yield (number of fruits per plant and single fruit weight) attributes of tomato. The results suggested that Admire performed better as compared over all other treatments which was followed by Cymbush. Performance of Soybean oil was also found effective against the TYLCV infection, whereas Nymbicidin was found ineffective in some cases. Moreover the percentage of TYLCV incidence and percent reduction of fruit yield were found to be positively and significantly correlated between each other. The reduction of tomato yield was positively and significantly correlated with the percent reduction of all the growth and yield attributes studied.

Methodology:

The research program was conducted at the Research Farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur during November 2006 to March 2007. Popular tomato variety Manik (BARI Tomato-1) was used in the experiment. Three different insecticides namely Admire (0.1%), Cymbush (0.1%), Nimbicidin (0.1%) and Organic oil namely soybean oil (1%) were evaluated against the incidence of TYLCV. The spraying was applied at 30 days old seedlings which was continued up to flowering stage of tomato plants in the field with 10 days interval. All the collected data were analyzed by following the analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique and mean differences were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test using a computer operated statistical program named MSTAT-C.

Achievement/Findings:

Admire performed better as compared to all other treatments which was followed by Cymbush. Soybean oil was also found effective against the TYLCV infection whereas the performance of Nimbicidin was found ineffective in some cases. Admire and Cymbush were found to be more effective for the management of TYLCV in tomato field as compared to the other chemicals sprayed in the tomato field.
