Some Quality Parameters of Wastewater at Different Discharge Locations of Mymensingh Municipality

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study was undertaken to assess some quality parameters of wastewater at different discharge locations of Mymensingh city and Bangladesh Agricultural University campus area to know the suitability of using wastewater for irrigation and aquaculture. Eight samples were collected from eight different discharge locations. Collected samples were analyzed for pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Total Nitrogen and Available Phosphorus. The test results showed that the value of pH, EC, TDS, DO, total Nitrogen and available Phosphorus of the wastewater samples varied from 6.47 to 7.08, 0.106 to 0.415 mS/cm, 567 to 1960 mg/l, 0.32 to 1.86 mg/l, 3.5 to 31.75 mg/l and 1.26 to 14.92 mg/l respectively. Considering the investigated parameters, it is revealed that the wastewater of Mymensingh municipality was suitable for irrigation purpose, but for the use of aqua-cultural purpose most of the sources of wastewater were not suitable because of the dissolved oxygen level was very low that may result in fish mortality.

Objectives:

i. To evaluate the chemical properties of wastewater like pH, EC, TDS, DO, Total Nitrogen and Available Phosphorus.

ii. To assess the suitability of using wastewater for irrigation and aquaculture.

Methodology:

Wastewater samples were collected from various discharge locations of Mymensingh city and Bangladesh Agricultural University campus area during March 2011. Eight samples were collected from eight different discharge locations in 500 ml plastic bottles. These bottles were cleaned and then washed with drinking water followed by distilled water before sampling. After sampling, preservation of samples is the main thing to obtain good quality result. By far, the most common preservative is cooling to 4°C. This serves to slow biological activity in the sample and keep dissolved gases in solution. After collecting the wastewater sample, the bottles were sealed immediately by tighten head to avoid exposure to air. To provide necessary information for each sample such as date of collection, location, source of water, etc. the bottles were labeled separately with a unique identification number. During test period the temperature varied from 22-24 ⁰C. The parameters like pH, EC, TDS and DO directly measured by the "Water Quality Monitor" at Environmental Engineering Laboratory in the Department of Farm Structure and Environmental Engineering, total Nitrogen and available Phosphorus of the samples was determine at Agri-Varsity Humboldt Soil Testing Laboratory in the Department of Soil Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Total nitrogen and available phosphorus found out by nitrogen distillation unit using semi micro Kjeldal method and colorimetric method respectively .

Achievement/Findings:

On the basis of investigated parameters of the study it can be concluded that, the wastewater discharge into the different locations of Mymensingh municipality is suitable for irrigation purpose, but in some point's nitrogen and phosphorus level was significantly high which cause luxuriant growth of stems and leaves that hampers the overall yield. However, these problems can usually be overcome by good fertilizer and irrigation management. For aqua cultural purpose most of the sources of wastewater of Mymensingh municipal area is not suitable, because of the Dissolved Oxygen level is extremely low that may result in fish mortality. Wastewater containing excess phosphorus and nitrogen in maximum locations may cause algae growth in quantities sufficient to cause odor problems; dead and decaying algae can cause oxygen depletion problems which in turn can kill fish and other aquatic lives.
