Survey of Gummosis Disease of Jackfruit

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey program was conducted during 2008-2010 in nine locations of Bangladesh to asses the incidence of gummosis caused by Phomopsis sp. of jackfruit trees. About 12.0-87.0% plants belonging in different age groups were found infected with gummosis disease. Older plants are mostly suffering from the disease which was found non-curable (27.8%) compared to younger ones.

Methodology:

The survey area had been selected where jackfruit is widely growing such as Jaintapur (Sylhet); Kapashia and Pirazli (Gazipur); Ramghar and Khagrachari (Khagrachhari); Akhaura (Brahmanbaria); Shakhipur (Tangail) and Raikhali (Rangamati). As there is not well-organized orchards of jackfruit, plant growing any places had been counted from various locations and the incidence of the diseases had been recorded. Some of the infected points raised confusion to identify whether there is stem borer infection or disease infected; the portion was debarked and the causal agent was confirmed after laboratory test. The survey was conducted during 2008-2010 in few locations like Ramghar, Khagrachhari; Akhaura, B. Baria and Modhupur, Tangail.

Achievement/Findings:

Results indicated that from 9 locations about 12.0-87.0% i.e., in an average 62.01% plants have been suffering from gummosis disease in the selected areas. In Khagrachari, 358 plants were visited out of which 310 plants were found infected by gummosis disease which constituted 86.59% whereas the infection was found 12% in the Haribhasha, Panchaghar areas. Considering the plant age, higher disease incidence was found in the older plants i.e., plants belonging 20-40 years old which are non-curable and constituted in an average of 27.8%.
