Study on Pest Status and Development of Management Strategies Against Fruit Fly and Spined Citrus Bug in Mandarin

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Juri Upazilla, Moulvibazar during July to November 2009 to find out critical time of infestation and effective control measures against fruit fly and spined citrus bug. There were five treatments used in the experiment viz. T₁: Pheromone trap for fruit fly + Hand picking adult and nymph of bug and infested fruits with larvae, T₂: Pheromone trap for fruit fly + Hand picking adult and nymph of bug and infested fruits with larvae + release of Green Lace Wing (GLW) larvae (100/plant) T₃: Pheromone trap for fruit fly + spraying of Ripcord @ 1ml/l of water, T_4:Spraying of Sumithion 50EC @ 2ml/l of water and T₅: Control. The results indicated that the most critical period of infestation of citrus spined bug and fruit fly was July and October, respectively and methyl euginol pheromone trap + Hand picking of adult and nymph of bug and infested fruits with larvae + release of Green Lace Wing (GLW) larvae showed best performance in reducing fruit fly infestation but no treatments were found to be effective against spined citrus bug.

Objectives:

To identify the critical time of infestation and effective management strategies

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Juri, Moulvibazar, Bangladesh during July to November 2009 to find out critical time of infestation and effective control measures against fruit fly and spined citrus bug of mandarin following Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) with four replications. There were five treatments used in experiment viz. T_1:Pheromone trap for fruit fly + Hand picking adult and nymph of bug and infested fruits with larvae, T₂: Pheromone trap for fruit fly + Hand picking adult and nymph of bug and infested fruits with larvae + release of Green Lace Wing (GLW) larvae (100/plant) T₃: Pheromone trap for fruit fly + spraying of Ripcord @ 1ml/l of water, T₄: Spraying of Sumithion 50EC @ 2ml/l of water and T₅: Control. Non- target pests were controlled by hand picking and destruction. Intercultural operations were done as and when needed. Insecticides sprays were conducted in morning with the help of Knapsack sprayer. Pheromone traps were placed on the branch of the plant (treatment wise) maintaining 10m distance. Fruit fly captured in the trap was collected treatment wise and counted twice a week and recorded. The number of healthy and infested fruits was counted at harvesting period. Total number of fruits per plant and infested fruit per plant was counted and per cent infestation was calculated. Data on incidence pattern of fruit fly and spined citrus bug were recorded from non sprayed mandarin plants. The data recorded on different parameters were analyzed statistically after necessary transformations by using MSTAT-C software for analysis of variance after transformation as per necessity. ANOVA was made by F variance test and the differences between treatment means were compared by DMRT (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

The results revealed that the fruit fly infestation started in July, 2009 (1.15%) which slightly increased in August (4.5%) and then reached at the peak in October (24.19%). On the other hand, the highest infestation (18.11%) of spined citrus bug was recorded in August and then gradually decreased and continued up to up to the end of the season (1.23%). Such variations are found might be due to the variation of temperature, relative humidity and rainfall.
