Collection and Evaluation of Snake Gourd Germplasm in Hill Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted with eleven collected snake gourd lines at ARS, Raikhali, Rangamati hill district, during the summer season of 2009. Number of fruits/plant ranged from 17.83-51.17 where three lines (TARAI 011, TARAI 009 and TARAI 002) were high bearer (46.83-51.17/plant). Individual fruit weight varied from 110-235 g where heavier fruits (181.67-235.00 g) were produced by six lines (TARAI 003, TARAI 011, TARAI 009, TARAI 002, TARAI 005 and TARAI 001). Yield (t/ha) varied from 14.00-38.32 tons, the lines TARAI 011, TARAI 009, TARAI 002, TARAI 006,TARAI 005 and TARAI 001 were high yielding (38.32, 37.46, 36.13, 35.88, 35.21 and 34.26 t/ha respectively.

Objectives:

To find out suitable germ plasm for OP variety.

Methodology:

An evaluation trial of snake gourd germplasm was conducted at ARS, Raikhali, Rangamati Hill District during summer, 2009. Eleven germplasm viz TA RAI 001, TA RAI 002, TA RAI 003, TA RAI 004, TA RAI 005, TA RAI 006, TA RAI 007, TA RAI 008, TA RAI 009, TA RAI 010 and TA RAI 011 were collceted from different location in the hilly region. The seeds were sown in the polybag on 25th March, 2009 and 20 days old seedlings were transplanted in the main field on 15th April, 2009. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 2 m x 2 m. The land was fertilized with cowdung 10 t/ha, Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and Zinc @ 175, 175, 150, 100 and 12 kg/ha respectively. The total amount of cowdung, TSP, Gypsum and Zinc and 1/3rd of each of Urea and MP were applied during final land preparation and in the pit. The rest of urea and MP were applied in four equal installments at 20, 35, 55 and 75 days after transplanting. The intercultural operations were done as and when needed. Data on plant height at 1st female flowering, number of nodes at 1st male & female flowering, vine length at 1st male & female flowering, number of branch per plant, number of fruits per plant, weight of fruits per plant, fruit length, fruit diameter, weight of single fruits, yield (t/ha) were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering earliness, acceptable fruit character, high yield and attractive fruit colour, fruit shape the 6 lines TA RAI 011, TA RAI 009, TA RAI 002, TA RAI 006, TA RAI 005 & TARAI 001 were selected for further evaluation on the aspect of inbred line and RYT.
