Collection and Evaluation of French Bean Germplasm for Seed (khaishya) Purpose in the Hilly Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An evaluation trail with five French bean germplasm was carried out at Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati during the period from 08 November, 2009 to 13 February, 2010 with a view to observe the performance of French bean for seed (khaishya) purposes in the hilly region. The germplasm PVRAI 005 showed the highest seed yield (4.10 t/ha) followed by PVRAM 001(3.55 t /ha); PVRAI 006 (3.05 t/ha); PVRAI 002 (2.62 t /ha); while the lowest seed yield was (2.59 t /ha) observed from the germplasm PVRAI 003.

Objectives:

To select the most suitable line/lines for attractive colour, shape, higher yield and for seed purpose.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at ARS, Raikhali, Rangamati Hill District during the winter (rabi) season of 2009-2010. Seeds of five French bean lines (PVRAM 001, PVRAI 002, PVRAI 003, PVRAI 005 and PVRAI 006) were sown on 8th November, 2009 @ two seeds/hill. After 15 DAS thinning was done from each hill keeping one healthy seedling. Cowdung and fertilizer- Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum were applied @ 10 tons, 55 kg, 160 kg, 160 kg and 30 kg per hectare respectively (Islam, et al., 2004). Cowdung was applied after opening the land. The entire quantity of TSP, MP, Gypsum and 1/3 rd of total urea were applied at the time of final land preparation. Rest of urea was top dressed in two equal splits at 20 and 40 days of sowing of seeds in the field. Top dressing of fertilizers was done followed by irrigation. In addition to pre-sowing irrigation, four additional irrigations were given to the crop. The unit plot size was 3 m x 1.5 m and 20 cm x 10 cm spacing was maintained. Pods were harvested at physiological maturity stage for recording plot seed yield as well as seed yield per hectare. The data on numbers of pods per plant, numbers of seed per plant, pod length, pod breadth, number of seeds per pod, seed length, seed dia, 100 seed weight and seed yield ton per hectare etc were recorded from randomly selected 10 plants of the inner rows. The plot yield was converted to per hectare yield. The different parameters were analyzed statistically and the treatment means were separated by DMRT at 5% and 1% level of probability.

Achievement/Findings:

The result revealed that the highest seed yield (4.10 t/ha) was achieved in PVRAI 005 line. This result might be due to the cumulative positive effects of the plant height (99.46 cm), number of pods per plant (11.00), pod breadth (1.43 cm), seed diameter (1.32 cm) and weight of 100 seeds (113.33 g) per plant.In respect of attractiveness colour, shape, yield and organoleptic test the four French bean lines PVRAM 001, PVRAI 002, PVRAI 005 and PVRAI 006 has been selected as promising line, which may recommended for RYT.
