Response of Lentil to Zinc and Boron in Charland

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of different combinations of Zinc (Zn) and Boron (B) on the growth and yield of lentil was studied in the charland of Charsadipur,Pabna under AEZ-11 during Rabi season of 2014-15 to find out the response and optimum dose of Zn and B for growing lentil in the charland. The experiment consisted of four treatments such as: T₁= Recommended fertilizer dose (FRG’12), T₂= T₁+1 kg B ha^-1, T₃= T₁+3 kg Zn ha^-1 and T₄= T₁+1kg B+3 kg Zn ha^-1. The experiment was designed in RCB with three replications. The variety of lentil was BARI Masur-6.Dry matter production per plant was lower at different growth stages i.e. before flowering, 80%flowering and maturity stages with low level of B (T₁). Additional 1.0 kg B ha^-1(T₂) remarkably increased dry matter at all growth stages. Additional 3.0 kg Zn ha^-1(T₃) and also additional Zn with additional B (T₄)increased dry matter production of lentil but lower than additional B only. Performance of yield attributes of lentil found better with recommended fertilizer plus 1.0 kg B ha^-1(T₂)that produced significantly highest seed yield (1.40 tha^-1) which was statistically at par with T₄(1.36 tha^-1). Additional 3 kg of Zn ha^-1(T₃) and additional Zn with additional B (T₄) produced statistically similar seed yield but significantly higher than T₁(1.03 tha^-1). In terms of economic return,maximum gross margin(Tk.52230 ha^-1) was obtained from T₂and minimum (Tk.25650 ha^-1) from T₁.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum dose of Zn and B for growing lentil in the charlands of Pabna district.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the charland of Charsadipur areas in Pabna, under AEZ-11 during Rabi season of 2014-15. The soil texture of the land was sandy. The pH, organic matter, total N, available P, K, S and Zn were 8.1, 0.82%, 0.05%, 13.30 µg g soil^-1, 0.32 meq 100g soil^-1, 9.2 µg g soil^-1 and 0.57 µggsoil^-1, respectively. The experiment consisted of four fertilizer packages viz.T₁= Recommended fertilizers(FRG’12), T₂= T₁ + 1 kg B ha^-1, T₃= T₁ + 3 kg Zn ha^-1 and T₄= T₁ + 1 kg B + 3 kg Zn ha^-1.The experiment was designed in RCB maintaining three replications. The variety BARI Masur-6 was used in this study. Recommended fertilizer dose as per FRG’12 was 18-30-25-18-1-1 kg N-P-K-S-Zn-B ha^-1, respectively. After completion of land preparation the entire amount of all fertilizers were applied as per treatment specification. The seed of lentil was broadcasted in each plot on November 06, 2014.Weeding was done once at vegetative stage for better growth of the crops. To control Stemphylum blight and, foot and root rot disease of lentil Rovral 50 WP three times and Bavistin one time were applied at 7-10 days interval. Other intercultural operations were done when required. Lentil whole plant samples were collected at the end of vegetative stage, 80% flowering stage and maturity stage and oven dried for measuring dry matter production and crop growth rate (CGR). Lentil was harvested on February 13, 2015. Necessary data on days to flowering, days to maturity, yield and yield contributing characters were collected and analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Recommended fertilizers(as per FRG 2012 of BARC) + 1 kg B ha^-1 contributed to better crop growth and significantly higher yield of lentil in charland of Pabna. Additional boron in combination with additional zinc reduced plant growth and yield.
