Effect of Seed Priming in Zinc Solutions on Chickpea Varieties in High BARInd Tract

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was carried out at farmer’s field of FSRD site, Kadamshahar, Godagari, Rajshahi during 2014-15 to find out the optimum zinc concentration for seed priming of chickpea to grow in the High Barind Tract. There were five treatments of two chickpea varieties. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block design with three replications. The treatments were viz. T₁=Dry seed, T₂= Water primed, T₃=0.025% of Zn solution, T₄= 0.05% of Zn solution and T₅=0.075% of Zn solution. The seeds of chickpea (varieties BARI Chola-5 and BARI Chola-9) were primed for 12 hours with water, and 0.025%, 0.05 %, 0.075% Zn solutions as per treatment specification. Seed primed with 0.05% Zn solution resulted in the highest seed yield of chickpea for both the varieties. Consequently, the maximum gross return and, gross margin were obtained from priming with 0.05% Zn solution (T₄) followed by 0.075% Zn solution (T₅) with both the varieties BARI Chickpea-5 and BARI Chickpea-9. It might be concluded that seed priming with 0.05-0.075% Zn solution improves grain yield of chickpea.

Objectives:

To study the effects of seed priming with zinc solution on the yield and yield contributing characters of chickpea in the High Barind Tract.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Farming System Research and Development (FSRD) site, Kadamshahor, Godagari, Rajshahi during Rabi season of 2014-15. The soil of the experimental plots belongs to Amnura series under AEZ 26 and composed of grey terrace soils of silty loam to silty clay loam in texture with a pH value of 5.9. The soil contained 0.89% organic matter, 0.08% total N, 8 ppm available P, 0.23 mq% exchangeable K, 15 ppm available S, 0.1 ppm available B and 1.2 ppm available Zn. The moisture of the soil was 20% (Dry weight basis) at the sowing time. The treatments were viz. T₁=Dry seed, T₂= Water primed, T₃=0.025% of Zn solution, T₄= 0.05% of Zn solution and T₅=0.075% of Zn solution. The size of experimental plot was about 4m × 5m with 3 compact replications. Seed of chickpea varieties (BARI Chola-5 & BARI Chola-9) were primed in water, 0.025%, 0.05 % and 0.075% Zn solutions using ZnSO₄ as a source of Zn for 12 hours. Dry seed (non-primed) was used as a control treatment. Seed was sown on November 13, 2014 with the help of hand hoe at a seed rate of 45 kg ha^-1. A plot size of 4 m × 5 m with rows distance of 30 cm was used. The fertilizers were applied STB fertilizer doses (FRG 2012). Urea and triple super phosphate (TSP) were used as sources of N and P, respectively. The cultural practices were applied uniformly. Chickpea was harvested on 16 March 2015. All the data were statistically analyzed and the mean comparisons were made by LSD at 5% level (Gomez and Gomez, 1984). The economic analysis was done for gross return, gross margin and marginal benefit cost ratio of different sowing dates following the method suggested by Perrin et al. (1979).

Achievement/Findings:

Priming seeds of chickpea with dilute solutions of ZnSO₄ was effective in raising seed yields by amounts equivalent to those obtained using much larger amounts of soil-applied ZnSO₄. Considering the above results it might be concluded that BARI Chola-5 and BARI Chola-9 priming with 0.05 Zn solution for 12 hours were economically profitable and viable for the production of chickpea in High Barind Tract (HBT).
