Effects of Time Planting on Flowering and Fruiting of Tomato Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out at the HRC Farm, BARI during the period from October, 2009 to March 2010. The experiment was set up in a Randomized Complete Block Design (factorial way). Factor A comprised five varieties viz., BARI Tomato-2, BARI Tomato-3, BARI Tomato-4, BARI Tomato-9 and BARI Hybrid Tomato-4 and Factor B comprised of three sowing time October 1, October 15 and October 30, 2009. Effect of sowing time and variety was found significant for most of the parameters. Significant variation was found as to parameter yield (t/ha) due to the combined effect of sowing time and variety. BARI hybrid tomato – 4 produced the highest yield (85.20 t/ha) when sown on October 15. On the other hand, BARI tomato – 9 and BARI hybrid tomato – 4 yielded the second highest (79.20 and 81.60 t/ha respectively) when sown on October 1. Number of fruits per plant was found the highest (39.51) in BARI hybrid tomato – 4 when sown on 15 October. The lowest (26.49) number of fruit was found in BARI tomato – 3. BARI hybrid tomato – 4 also produced the highest yield per plant when sown on 15 October and BARI tomato – 9 and BARI hybrid tomato – 4 when sown on 1 October

Objectives:

, The present experiment has been undertaken to find out the effect of planting time for higher yield of tomato and to screen out the variety (s) tolerant to cool night temperature conditions.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the HRC Farm, BARI during the period from October, 2009 to March 2010. The geographic position of the experimental site is in the subtropical zone, characterized by heavy rainfall during the months of April to September and scanty during the rest of the year (Anon, 1960). The experiment was set up in a Randomized Complete Block Design (factorial way). Factor A comprised of five varieties viz., BARI Tomato-2, BARI Tomato-3, BARI Tomato-4, BARI Tomato-9 and BARI Hybrid Tomato-4 and Factor B comprised of three sowing time October 1, October 15 and October 30, 2009. Thus, there were 15 different treatment combinations in the present experiment. Twenty six days old seedlings were transplanted in the main field. The crop was fertilized with cowdung 10 ton/ha, Urea 550 kg/ha, TSP 250 kg/ha, MP 150 kg/ha. During final land preparation, half of the cowdung and the entire quantity of TSP were applied. The pits were prepared one week before planting. The remaining cowdung and 1/3 of MP were applied at that time. The Urea and the rest of MP were applied in three equal splits at 10, 25 and 40 days after transplanting. Irrigation along with other intercultural operations was done as and when necessary. Data were collected on different yield contributing characters and yield. Recorded data were analyzed statistically and means were compared by DMRT.

BARI Hybrid Tomato-4 and BARI Tomato-9 seem to be suitable to cultivate in the area where low night temperature prevails.
