Response of Okra to Boron and Zinc Fertilization

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out at the Research field of Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the period from March to July, 2009 to evaluate the response of okra (BARI Dherosh -1) to four levels each of B (0,1,1.5 and 2 kg/ha) and Zn (0,1.5, 3 and 4.5 kg/ha). Application of B and Zn fertilizer exerted significant influence on the yield attributes and yield of okra. Addition of B up to 1.5 kg/ha resulted in 90% higher yield (16.63 t/ha) of okra compared to control (8.75 t/ha) treatment (without added B). Application of B beyond 1.5 kg/ha depressed the yield of okra. Zn had also significant positive response to the yield of okra. Yield of okra increased with the increasing rates of Zn. The highest yield (14.51 t/ha) was obtained with 4.5 kg Zn/ha. Interaction effect between B and Zn showed significant influence on number of fruits/plant, individual fruit weight and yield/ha. The yield (18.46 t/ha) was produced by the application of 1.5 kg B and 4.5 kg Zn/ha with a blanket dose of N150 P80 K80 S20 kg/ka plus 5 ton cowdung/ha.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum doses of zinc and boron for the production of Okra in Albaquept soil.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the research field of HRC, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the period from March to July 2009. The soil of experimental field was silty loam in texture belonging to the Grey Terrace soil (Albaquept). Soil samples were collected from the experimental plot from a depth of 0-20 cm prior to application of fertilizer.Four levels each of boron (0,1.0,1.5 and 2.0 kg/ha) and zinc(0,1.5, 3 and 4.5 kg/ha) were used as experimental materials. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design under factorial arrangement with three replications. The unit plot size was 4mx4m. A blanket dose of N₁₅₀ P₈₀ K₈₀ S₂₀ kg/ha and 5 ton cowdung/ha were used in this experiment. Fertilizers N_,P, K, S, B and Zn were applied as urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum, boric acid and zine oxide, respectively. The whole amount of organic manure P, S, Zn, B and one third of urea and MoP were applied as basal. Variety BARI dherosh-1 was used in the experiment. Two seeds were sown in the field in the second week of March 2009 with a spacing of 50cm x40cm. One healthy plant was kept in each pit finally. The rest of urea and muriate of potash were applied as topdressing in three equal.irrigation, insecticide was done as and when necessary. Data on plant height, number of fruits /plant, length and diameter of fruits and individual fruit weight were recoded from 5 (five) randomly selected plants. Weight of total fruits/plot was recorded to compute per hectare yield. All the data were analyzed statistically. The regression analysis was used for optimum dose of B and Zn.

Achievement/Findings:

Results revealed that there is a scope for yield improvement of Okra by suitable dose of B and Zn. However, application of B @ 1.5 kg/ha and Zn@ 4.5 kg/ha along a blanket dose of N150 P80 K80 S20 and 5 ton cow dung/ha could be economically optimum for maximizing yield of Okra in Grey Terrace soil of Joydebpur, Gazipur.
