Response of Chickpea Varieties to Elite Strains of Rhizobiumin in High BARInd Tract

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out during Rabi season of 2014-15 at Farming System Research and Development (FSRD) Site, Kadamshahar, Godagari, Rajshahi (AEZ 26) with a view to assess the effect of Rhizobium inoculation on four varieties/lines of chickpea viz., BARI Chola-5, BARI Chola-9, ICCV-92944 and ICCV-92954. The treatments were designed in Randomized Complete Block having three replications. Each variety/line was tested with and without Rhizobium inoculation. Rhizobial inoculum (Rhizobium strain RCa-220) @ 1.5 kg/ha was used for seed inoculation. Inoculated plants gave significantly higher nodule number, nodule weight, stover yield and seed yield compared to un inoculated plants. Among four varieties/lines, BARI Chola-9 produced the highest nodule weight, seed yield and stover yield, while the highest nodule number was obtained from ICCV-92944.

Objectives:

To study the response of different chickpea genotypes to Rhizobium inoculation in High Barind Tract of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The field experiment with chickpea was carried out during Rabi season of 2014-15 at the Farming System Research and Development Site, Kadamshahar, Godagari, Rajshahi of On-farm Research Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. The site belongs to the Agro-ecological Zone 26 (High Barind Tract). The treatments were designed in Randomized Complete Block having three replications. The unit plot size was 4m × 5m. Four varieties/lines of chickpea, namely BARI Chola-5, BARI Chola-9, ICCV-92944 and ICCV-92954 were tested with and without Rhizobium inoculation. Basal fertilizer application was made with P22K42S20Zn5B1kg/ha with no N application. Rhizobial inoculum 1.5 kg/ha was used for inoculation treatment. The Rhizobjum strain was BARI RCa-220 and the number of Rhizobium cells/g inoculant was 2.4 × 108. The seeds were coated with Rhizobium inoculum before sowing. The crop was sown on 17 November 2014. Row to row distance was 30 cm and plant to plant was 15 cm. Thinning, weeding and other intercultural operations were done for normal growth of the crop. Ten randomly selected plants were uprooted at 50% flowering stage from each plot to record nodule weight and nodule number. Crops were harvested on 27 March 2015. Stover and seed yields for each unit plot were recorded. Different yield components were recorded from randomly selected 10 plants. All data were analyzed statistically by LSD test.
