Irrigation Cost Reduction Using Pvc Pipe Distribution System in Deep Tube Well

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The PVC pipe water distribution system (PWDS) was tested in a Deep Tube Well (DTW) under Barind Multipurpose Development Authority at Dharnurhat Upazila of Noagoan district during Boro season 2011-12. Before introducing PWDS about 30% water was lost due to poor (earthen and broken pacca channel) conveyance system of the DTW. After introducing PWDS about 99% conveyance loss was reduced. Therefore, in PWDS times required to irrigate per decimal area under head, middle and tail portion of the command area were 0.5, 0.9 and 1.1 minute whereas times required in without PWDS per decimal areas under head, middle and tail were 0.8. 1.3 and 1.5 minute respectively to irrigate. On average 31.6 percent irrigating time is reduced in PWDS therefore irrigation cost per hectare under head. middle and tail could be reduced by Taka 2646, 3162 and 3168 respectively.

Objectives:

To minimizing conveyance loss and increasing water use efficiency in rice production.

Methodology:

PVC pipe of 1400 ft length and 6 inch diameter, and 1200 ft length and 4 inch diameter we used as main and branch channel respectively. Two gate valves were connected with delivery pipe of the DTW so that water can be supplied in two directions independently. Lay out of PVC pipe distribution system (the schematic diagram) is. There was prepaid irrigation system and irrigation was given according to farmer's demand. The mainline of PWDS was divided into three portions such as head, middle and tail and farmers/plots under these portions were named head farmers/plots, middle farmers/plots and tail farmers/plots respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

By using PVC Pipe for water distribution system, about 99% conveyance loss was reduced, and on average 31.6 percent irrigating time was saved. Therefore, irrigation cost per hectare under head, middle and tail of the command area could be reduced by Taka 2646, 3162 and 3168 respectively.
