Effect of Mulching on the Growth, Yield and Quality Flower Production of Gerbera

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Influence of different mulches (water hyacinth, rice bran, black polythene, cocodust, sawdust and control) on gerbera was studied. The black polythene and cocodust were observed to be equally effective in producing maximum growth and floral characteristics of gerbera.

Objectives:

The present investigation was done for quality flower production of gerbera using optimum mulching material

Methodology:

The study was undertaken at Floriculture Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during Rabi season of 2009-2010. One month old tissue cultured seedling ofBARI Gerbera-1 variety was used as materials in this study. The treatments included in this study were water hyacinth (T1), rice bran (T2), black polythene (T3), cocodust (T4), sawdust (T5) and control (without mulch) (T6). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 2.0 ? 2.0 m and the plants were spaced 50 ? 40 cm. The crop was manured and fertilized with cowdung, Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum, Boric acid and ZnO @ of 8 tons, 250 kg, 275 kg, 225 kg, 125 kg, 12.0 kg and 4.0 kg per hectare respectively. Full doses of well decomposed cow dung, TSP, MP, Gypsum and Boric acid were applied during the final land preparation. Urea was applied in two equal splits at 45 and 75 days after planting the plantlets. Cultural operations such as weeding, irrigation, disease and pest management etc. were done as and when necessary. Five plants were selected at random in each replication for recording data on qualitative and quantitative characters.

Achievement/Findings:

Significant differences were observed on growth and yield attributes of gerbera due to various mulching treatment. The height of the plant was significantly superior (30.00 cm) in T₄ treatment. The plants of T₃ attained the maximum plant spread (33.00 cm) closely followed by T₄ (31.45 cm) treatment. The control treatment which received no mulching produced the minimum plant spread of 20.77 cm. Early flowering was observed in the plants of T₄ treatment (100 days) and it was at par with 102 days required for flowering by T₃ treatment. The treatment T6 took maximum days (115 days) to flowering. As regards to flower number ranged from 10 to 21 were observed among the genotypes. The maximum number of 21 and 20 flowers was produced by T₄ and T₃ treatment respectively, which significantly differ with other treatments. The length of stalk was maximum in T₄ treatment (30 cm) closely followed by T₃ treatment (28 cm). The shortest flower stalk of 17 cm was produced by T₆ treatment.
