Of Effect of Spacing and Phosphorus on Growth and Quality Flower Production Marigold

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present investigation was undertaken to standardize the optimum spacing and phosphorus application of Marigold. A field trial was conducted with four planting densities viz. 40 × 30cm (S1), 40 × 20cm (S2), 30 × 30cm (S3) and 30 × 20cm(S4) and four levels of P2O5 viz. 0 (P1), 40 (P2), 60 (P3) and 90 (P4) kg/ha. The experimental findings revealed that maximum yield (2044 no./plot) obtained from S4 treatment and minimum from S1 treatment. Phosphorus had significant effect on plant height, branches/plant, flower per plant and yield. The phosphorus level of 60 kg/ha produced significantly maximum yield (1600 no./plot). The combined effect of spacing and phosphorus S4P3 also influenced the yield (2324 no./plot).

Objectives:

To standardize the optimum spacing and phosphorus application of Marigold

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during winter season of 2009-2010 at Floriculture Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 1.5 m × 1.2 m. For planting densities viz. 40×30cm (S1), 40 × 20cm (S2), 30 × 30cm (S3) and 30 × 20cm (S4) were taken as main plot treatment and four levels of P₂O₅ viz. 0 (P1), 40 (P2), 60 (P3) and 90 (P4) kg/ha as sub-plot treatments. Seedlings were raised on nursery beds and uniformly grown up seedlings were transplanted on beds one month after sowing. A common dose of N and K i.e. 100kg N/ha and 80 kg K₂O/ha were applied. Full doses of K₂O were applied at the time of bed preparation. Half dose of nitrogen was applied at 25th day of transplanting and the remaining half dose 45 days after transplanting. P₂O₅ was applied as per the treatments. Observations were recorded on plant height, number of branches, days to flowering, flower number, flower diameter, flower weight etc. from 5 plants of each plot and analyzed properly.

Achievement/Findings:

Spacing had no significant effect on plant growth of marigold .It influenced only yield and seed weight per plant. Maximum yield (2044 no.) obtained from S₄ treatment and minimum (1100 no.) from S₁ treatment. S₁ treatment produced the highest seed weight/plant (2.30g) and S₄ gave the lowest result (1.95g).Phosphorus had significant effect on plant height, branches/plant, flower per plant and yield. It has been observed that plant height and number of branches were significantly affected by the amount of phosphorus applied. The effect of interaction between spacing and phosphorus was found to be significant . The highest number of flower (2324)/plot were recorded under S4P¬3 combination and the lowest (1005) under the control. These findings lend support to the findings of Sarkar et al., (1991) in Calendula.
