Effect of Row and Plant Spacing on Chrysanthemum

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out to find out the optimum row and plant spacing of Chrysanthemum (CM-011) with three levels of row spacing (25 cm, 35 cm and 45 cm) and three levels of plant spacing (20, 25 and 30 cm). Both the row and plant spacing significantly influenced the number of suckers/plant. Significant variation on different parameters of chrysanthemum was found due to different row spacing . Days to 50% flower bud initiation were statistically similar in R1 and R2 treatments. However, flower bud initiation was significantly earlier (86 days) in the plants of wider spaced (45.00 cm) rows than the others. There was no significant effect of row spacing on flower size.Though the interaction effect was not significant in case of days to 50% flower bud initiation, number of flower/plant and flower size, the combination 35 cm × 25 cm produced the longest stalk with maximum number of sucker production.

Objectives:

To determine the optimum plant and row spacing for chrysanthemum production towards higher yield

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Floriculture field of Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during November 2009 to June 2010. Three levels of row spacing (R1 = 25 cm, R2 = 35 cm and R3 = 45 cm) and three levels of planting distance (P1 = 20 cm, P2 = 25 cm and P3 = 30 cm) with CM-011 were used for this trial. It was laid out in RCB factorial design with three replications. Full doses of cowdung, MP, TSP @ 5000 kg, 100 kg and 120 kg per hectare respectively were applied during final land preparation. Urea 160 kg was applied in two equal split at 30 days and 60 days after planting, with one plant in each hill. The data on different flower and yield parameters were collected from 5 randomly selected plants in each plot. All the observed data were statistically analyzed using ‘Analysis of variance’ technique and differences among treatment means were compared by means of Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) method.

Achievement/Findings:

It was observed that, wider spaced plants (45 and 35 cm) significantly triggered to longer spike (9.0 cm and 8.5 cm) and higher number of flower per plant (19 and 17), whereas in closer row spacing (25 cm) which leads to get a higher number of sucker per plant. Based on the above findings, the combination 35 cm × 25 cm was found to be the best for longest stalk as well as higher production of sucker in chrysanthemum.
