Influence of Growth Retardants on Growth and Flower Yield of Dahlia

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Foliar application of ethrel (100, 250 and 500 ppm), cycocel (1000, 2000 and 4000 ppm) and Melic hydrazide (500 1000 and 1500 ppm) were tested on dwarfing and quality of flowers in Dahlia at the Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute during October 2009 to March 2010. Dahlia advance line DV-006 was used in the experiment. Various concentrations of cycocel, melic hydrazide and ethrel reduced plant height as well as flower size significantly as compared to control. Plants when sprayed with ethrel @ 100 and 250 ppm found to grow slowly and produced highest number of flower as compared to plants treated with cycocel and melic hydrazide. Flowering initiation was delayed in plant when treated with ethrel at higher concentration as compared to that of lower concentration. This might be due to the toxic effect of ethrel. However, growth retardants reduced flower size and number of florets per flower .Growth retardants might reduce meristem activities and inhibit the synthesis of endogenous growth hormone GA3 and thus suppressed the vegetative growth of plant. In the absence or insufficient concentration of GA3 the flowering hormone florigen, might become dominant and encourage plant to produce flower .concentrations of cycocel, melic hydrazide and ethrel reduced plant height as well as flower size significantly as compared to control. Ethrel @ 250 ppm produced highest number of flowers per plant 3.83 which was statistically similar to 3.16 flowers of control plant.

Objectives:

To investigate on producing dwarf Dahlia plant as a pot planting materials to produce attracting flower

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Floriculture farm, HRC, BARI during the period from October, 2009 to March 2010. It was laid out in RCBD with three replications. There were ten treatments viz. Ethrel (100, 250, 500 ppm), Cycocel (1000, 2000, 4000 ppm, Melic hydrazide (500, 1000, 1500 ppm) and control. Dahlia advanced line DV-006 was used in the experiment. Primarily cuttings were prepared for planting in the sand in September 2009. The main plantlets were transferred to 20 cm earthen pot in mid October, 2009 immediately after rooting. Potting media consisted of one part of sand, one part garden soil and two part cowdung. TSP and MP per pot were applied @ 12 and 3 g respectively. Urea @ 3, 4 and 3 g per pot were applied respectively 20, 30 and 40 days after transplanting. Uniform cultural practices were done throughout the experiment. Application of growth retardants was done through foliar application at 15 and 30 day of transplanting with hand sprayer. Data were collected on plant growth, flower size and flower yield. Collected data were analyzed statistically and means were separated by DMRT.
