Effect of Soil Amendments and Bio-control Agent to Control Fusarium Rot and Leaf Blight and Yield of Gladiolus

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at HRC, BARI with eight treatments (application of Poultry refuse, Mustard oil cake, Sawdust burning, Sesbania, Municipal waste, Tricho-compost, Leachate, and untreated control) to control Fusarium rot of gladiolus. The treatments were arranged following randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Among eight treatments Sesbania, Leachate and Tricho-compost treated plots reduced disease incidence and increased corm and cormel weight and produced higher spike yield in gladiolus.

Objectives:

To control Fusarium rot of gladiolus

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at HRC, BARI with eight treatments viz: T₁=poultry refuse @ 5t/ha, T₂ =mustard oil cake @ ½ t/ha, T₃ =sawdust burning @ 6 inches thick, T₄= Sesbania rostrata compost @ 3 t/ha, T₅ = municipal waste @ 5 t/ha, T₆ = Tricho-compost, @ 3t/ha, T₇ = Leachate and T₈ =control. The experimental design was RCB with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 1m x 1m and plant spacing was 25 cm x 15 cm. Poultry refuse, Tricho-compost and Mustard oil cake were applied before 15 days of corm sowing. Leachate was applied before 10 days of sowing and soil was covered with polyethylene sheet. Sawdust burning was burned before one day of corm sowing. Leaf blight disease severity was scored following 0-5 disease scoring scale and the data transferred into percent disease index (PDI). Spike length, rachis length, number of florets per spike, number of spike per plot, weight of spike, corm and cormel number and weight were also recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

Number of spike per plot was significantly higher in Sesbania, Tricho-compost and Leachate treated plots compared to the other treatments including control. Poultry refuse, mustard oil cake and sawdust burning also increased spike number compared to control. Spike weight was also increased in Sesbania, Tricho-compost and leachate treated plots. Yield of corm and cormel were increased due to soil amendment treatments and bio-control agent . The maximum corm weight was recorded in Sesbania treated plot followed by Tricho-compost and Leachate. While cormel production was the maximum in Leachate treated plot followed by Sesbania and Tricho-compost. Corm and cormel production was lower in control treatment. All the treatments reduced disease incidence compared to control treatments. Sesbania, Tricho-compost and Leachate reduced disease incidence and increased flower yield of Gladiolus.
