Effect of Storage Temperature and Packaging Materials on Post Harvest Life of Gladiolus

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted at the Floriculture Laboratory, HRC, BARI during last week of February to 1st week of March, 2010 to determine the optimum storage condition and packaging materials in order to extend the shelf life and durability for marketing of gladiolus flowers for the commercial growers. Flowers of cool temperature wrapped with perforated polyethylene bags showed better performance with longer vase life (8 days)

Objectives:

To determine the optimum storage condition and packaging materials materials in order to extend the shelf life and durability for marketing of gladiolus flowers for the commercial growers.

Methodology:

This experiment was conducted at the Floriculture Laboratory, Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute during last week of February to 1st week of March, 2010. Gladiolus spikes of 70 to 80 cm lengths were selected from the recommended variety BARI Gladiolus-1. Spikes were harvested when two or three basal floret started opening. Three spikes were randomly selected for each treatment and the treatments were replicated three times. The experiment was laid out in CRD factorial. There were two factors. Two levels of storage temperature (cool 10-12 0c temp. and normal 25-280 c temp.) for one day and four levels of packaging materials i.e. without packaging, wrapped with newspaper, wrapped with gunny bags and wrapped with perforated polyethylene bags (PPEB) were used in combination as treatments. Normal water was used in the vase. After recording the fresh weight, spikes were placed at different packaging materials and stored at different storage temperature. After one day taking weight, all spikes were placed in 500 ml Erlenmeyer flask containing 400 ml of water as per treatments. Data were recorded on the following parameters: Floret opening (%): Recorded from the day when the first floret opening till the spikes were discarded. Days taken to deterioration started: Days counted when the first basal floret becomes dry and close. Changes in fresh weight: It was expressed as percentage of original weight Vase life (days): Vase life was counted after keeping at vase in considering 50% floret senescence of a spike Recorded data were properly analyzed and means were separated by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

Based on the above finding, it may be said that flower of cool temperature (10-12⁰c) for one day wrapped with perforated polyethylene bags showed better performance. So, it can be assumed that gladiolus flower can be stored to some extent without deteriorating it’s quality and flowers should be wrapped with perforated polyethylene bags.
