Comparative Profitability of Potato Production in Rangpur and Munshigonj Districts of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was undertaken to determine the comparative profitability of potato production in Rangpur and Munshigonj district. Data were collected from 60 farmers (30 farmers from each district) during April- May 2010 using simple random sampling technique. The study revealed that the yield and price of potato was higher at Munshigonj compared to Rangpur district.Gross return and gross margin were also higher at Munshigonj. Benefit cost ratio (BCR) were 1.54 and 1.60 for Munshigonj and Rangpur, respectively implying that potato cultivation was more profitable at Rangpur. The small farmers obtained highest BCR (1.61) compared to medium (1.54) and large (1.52) farmers. Ensuring fair price of potato at harvesting time and availability of input within affordable price may increase profitability in both the locations. Quality seed is also a limiting factor in potato production. Proper step should be taken to ensure the supply of quality seeds during the planting period.

Objectives:

To analyze and compare the relative profitability of HYV potatoes according to location and farm size.

Methodology:

The present study was conducted in two purposively selected potato growing districts of Bangladesh to collect primary data. Munshiganj was chosen as high concentrated area and Rangpur as moderate concentrated area for potato production. After selecting the districts, sadar upazillas from each district were also selected purposively. Among the 11 unions of Rangpur sadar and 10 unions of Munshigonj sadar upazilla, Chandan pat and Adhara union respectively was selected randomly for data collection. In the next step, three villages from each of the union were also selected randomly. The villages under Chandanpat union were Shabajpur, Laherirhat, Islampur and that from Adhara union were Deyankandhi, Sonali and Charkishorgonj. A list of potato farmers of the selected villages was prepared with the help of village leaders and field level 4 extension personnel. Then farmers were selected using simple random sampling technique. Considering the limitation of time and fund, sample size of potato farmers was fixed at 60. Pre-testing was done before finalizing the interview schedule. Secondary data on area and production of potato were also used to supplement the information. The primary and most common goal of a farm is profit maximization. As most farms try to receive maximum profit in a perfectly competitive market situation, conditions for maximum profit were given emphasis in the present study. Profit or net return is the difference between total revenue (gross return) i.e. total value product (TVP) and the total factor cost (TFC). Total factor costs included all kinds of variable and fixed costs concerned with the production process.

Ensuring fair price of potato at harvesting time and availability of input within affordable price might increase profitability in both the locations. Quality seed was a limiting factor in potato production. Proper step should be taken to ensure the supply of quality seeds during the planting period. Potato cultivation can be more profitable if efficiency of farmers could be increased by imparting training on adoption of modern technology.
