Effect of Sowing Method on the Performance of Grasspea

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted under farmers’ field at the MLT site, Bhuapur, Tangail during the rabi season of 2014-15 to find out the effective sowing method for grasspea cultivation in char lands and to increase production and farmers' income. Three treatments viz. T₁: broadcast with optimum tillage, T₂: dibbling method and T₃: farmers’ practice (relay with T.Aman rice) were evaluated using RCB ddesign with six dispersed replications. The highest seed yield (1.18 t ha^-1) was obtained from T₃ and the lowest yield (0.67 t ha^-1) was obtained from T₁ treatment.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the MLT site, Bhuapur, Tangail (AEZ 8) during the rabi season of 2014-15. The design of the experiment was RCB with six replications. The unit plot size was 8 m x 5 m. Three treatments viz. T₁: Broadcast with optimum tillage, T₂: Dibbling method and T₃: Farmers’ practice (relay with T.Aman rice) was considered. The crop was fertilized with 16, 12 and 10 kg ha^-1 of N, P and K, respectively. In case of T₁ treatment half of N and all P & K were applied during final land preparation. The remaining N was top dressed after 30 days of sowing. In T₂ and T₃, all fertilizers except urea was applied during seeds sowing. BARI Khesari-2 was used as sowing material. The seeds were sown on 26 October to 03 November, 2014 maintaining 45 kg ha^-1 seed rate; 10 days before T.Aman rice harvest and nearby fallow land for others two treatments. Weeding and all kinds of intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The crop was harvested on 04 to 09 March, 2015. Data related to yield attributes were collected and were analyzed statistically using Crop Stat analytical package.

Achievement/Findings:

Results indicated that grasspea relayed with T.Aman gave highest yield over the other two practices. Dibbling method was effective where T.Aman rice were damaged or the land remained fallow after flood. Broadcast with optimum tillage method was not suitable in the study area. Because after tillage, the land losses the soil moisture quickly and as such the crop faces water stress and reduced the yield performance.
