Differences in Yield and Benefit Between Two Management Practices of Transplanted Aman Rice Cultivation in Char Areas in Noakhali

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was carried out at the farming systems research and development (FSRD) site Atkapalia, Noakhali to estimate the yield and benefit gap under different management practices of transplanred.aman (T.aman) rice (Var. BRRI Dhan32) cultivated during December 1999 to April 2000. Demonstration plots (DP) gave higher yield (4.54 t ha^-1) than the farmers practice (FP) (3.93 t ha^-1). The yield gap between DP and FP was found 611 kg ha^-1(13'%) and that of benefit gap (gross margin) on full cost basis was found Tk.2870.00 ha^-1(17%), while it was Tk.2787.00 ha^-1 (11%,) on the basis of cash cost. Using Cobb-Douglas production function model, it was estimated that urea, TSP and number of seedlings hill^-1 played significant role in T.aman production in both demonstration plot (DP) and farmers' practices (FP). The study suggested that the difference in yield and benefit could be minimized at farm level to increase use of human labour, purchased seed and fertilizers.

Objectives:

I) To estimate the yield, benefit differences of T.aman rice under different management practices.

ii) To identify the factors behind yield differences of T.aman rice under different management

Methodology:

The study was carried out at the Farming Systems Research and Development (FSRD) site, Atkapalia, Noakhali to estimate the differences in yield and benefit of T.aman under different management practices. Two management practices i.e. demonstration plot (DP) and farmers practices (FP) were considered in this study. A total of 15 demonstration plots (DP) and 35 farmers plots (FP) with BRRI Dhan-32 were selected purposively to collect primary data. Among the demonstrations, On-Farm Research Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) established 5 plots and the rest 10 were established by Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) at farmers' field. Data for the study were collected during December 1999 to April 2000 through survey method by using a pre-tested schedule. The yield and benefit between different management practices of production can be expressed as: Gap1: Differences between the yield obtained from DP and FP, Gap2: Differences between the benefit obtained at full and cash cost basis from DP and FP. These differences of yield and economic benefits were measured by tabular method of analysis using average and percentage. Cobb-Douglas production function was used separately in order to identify the relative contribution of different production factors to the yield. Achievement/Findings:

The forgoing results and discussions revealed that the production of T.aman rice could be increased by following recommended or demonstration plot practices and yield gap could also be minimized. It was found that urea, TSP and number of seedling per hill played significant role in T.aman rice production in both demonstration plots and farmers' practices. Significant difference was observed in human labour, purchased seed and fertilizers used in demonstration plots and farmers' practices. The yield at farmers practice could be increased by increasing use of human labour, purchased seed and fertilizers. Lack of production knowledge particularly for HYV T.aman rice cultivation, unavailability of quality seed of BRRI Dhan32, high price of fertilizer and insecticides and lack of cash, high labour wage, water logging due to excess rain and non-availability of credit and high interest rate were the main constraints related to HYV T.aman rice cultivation mentioned by the farmers.
