Spread of Potato Leaf Roll Virus and Virus Y in Potato Field Through Aphid Vectors

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Studies were made on four commercial potato varieties, namely Ailsa, Binella, Cardinal and Diamant to elicit information on the climatic factors in relation to the spread of Potato Leaf Roll Virus (PLRV) and Potato Virus Y (PVY) by the aphid vectors. Investigation was done in the experimental field of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University,Gazipur in 1998. PVY spread was more than PLRV. Field spread of the PLRV and PVY were found to be positively correlated with the aphid populations, which in turn were positively and negatively correlated with temperature and relative humidity, respectively.

Objectives:

To find out the reaction of different aphid vectors on potato Leaf Roll Virus and Virus Y
To estimate yield loss due to the diseases and their spread.

Methodology:

Healthy, PLRV and PVY infected second generation seed tubers of four potato cultivars namely Ailsa, Binella, Cardinal and Diamant were planted in the experimental field of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University,Gazipur on November 12, 1998. The experimental design was 3 x 4 factorial RCB with four replications. The unit plot size was 2.4 x 4.4 m. Potato tubers were planted maintaining 60 cm row to row and 25 cm hill to hill distances. Recommended doses of manure and fertilizers viz. 10 t of cowdung, 326-217-250 kg of urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash per hectare were used. Intercultural operations of weeding, irrigation, mulching and earthing up were performed as and when necessary. Four yellow traps were placed in the experimental field at the date of plant emergence to catch the aphid vectors following the procedure described. The yellow traps were stationed on wooden stands in the potato field at a height of 15 cm. The traps were made of aluminum sheet (45 x 30 x 12.5 cm) and painted inside of bottom and upto the line of the inner sidewalls from bottom with bright yellow colour. Yellow traps were filled with clean water upto the line of yellow paint. A few drops of liquid trix soap were added to the water of the traps, so that the aphids could not fly after falling into the traps. Aphids were collected daily at 11 am and the water traps were cleaned, washed and re-filled with fresh water. The aphids were counted up to the date of haulm killing. Meteorological observations were recorded for average atmospheric temperatures (19, 52-26.46 ºC), relative humidity (70.12-83.50 %) and rainfall (11.38 mm) during the entire crop period throughout the course of these investigations. The data on 10 days mean of these factors have been presented.

Achievement/Findings:

Since aphids in the field transmit the PLRV and PVY, it is logical that high spread of virus would be dependent upon the aphid population in the field. PLRV and PVY spread in the field was found to be positively correlated with the high population of aphids. It was thus clear that, increase of temperature and decrease of relative humidity influenced in increasing the aphid population in the potato field.
