Development of Bio Rational Based Integrated Management Package(s) Against Diamond Back Moth Attacking Cabbage

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in the experimental field of Entomology Division, BARl, Gazipur to develop an IPM package for Diamond back moth (DBM) attacking cabbage grown under different planting dates. Three Bt strain and one fungal product along with farmers practice were evaluated n this study. Bt strains showed encouraging results against DBM Very low infestation was observed in the December 2013 transplanting where head damage score was 1.61-2.96 in the Bt train treated plots. Cabbage planted during January 2014 recorded higher haed damage score which ranged from 3.67-3.99 in the Bt strain treated plots. While in control plots, head damage core was 3.95 and 4.68 in December and January transplanting, respectively.

Objectives:

To develop bio-rational based integrated management packages against (Diamond back moth) DBM

Methodology:

This study was started from December 2013 in the experimental field of Entomology Division, BARI, Gazipur and continued till April 2014. A distance of 200 m2 was maintained between the treatments plots and the untreated control plots. Cabbage was transplanted twice, 15t transplanting on 27 December 2013 and harvesting of those transplanted cabbage heads were continued till 3 I March2014, 2nd transplanting on 22 January 2014, which continued till 30 April 2014. There were six treatments and three replications and the experiment was set following RCB design. The six treatments were: T 1 = Spraying of B t strain EG 7841@ of 2g/3 litre of water at 10 days interval +DBM pheromone trapping.Ts= Spraying of Bt strain E 911 @Ig/I of water at 10 days interval + OBM pheromone trapping.T,= Spraying ofBt strain ABTS 1857@lg/4 litre of water at 10 days interval + DBM pheromone trapping.T,= Spraying of Mycojaal(Beauvaria bassiana) @ ImVI of water at 10 days interval+ DBM pheromone trapping.T,= Farmers practice (Spraying of Cypermethrin @ ImVI of water) and T6= control. Numbers of healthy and infested heads were counted and recorded from randomly selected 2m2 area of each treatment replicates at 7 days interval. Treatment wise percent head infestation was calculated from the pooled data of fives observations. Damage scores were obtained following Dreyer (1987) modified damage scoring system. Number of DBM and common cutworm larvae were counted and recorded from 5 randomly selected heads at 7 days interval.

Sharp differences in head infestations as well as prevalence of DBM were observed in different planting times. Cabbage planted during December and harvested within March was less infested with leaf-eating caterpillars. The head damage score was 1.61-2.96 in the Bt strain treated plots. Significantly higher yields were also recorded in the treated plots than the farmers practice . Higher infestation was observed in the January 2014 transplanting, which was harvested till April 2014. The head damage score was3.67-3.99 in the Bt strain treated plots . Significantly higher yields were also recorded in the Bt strain treated plots than the farmers practice & untreated control plots. Number of DBM were higher in the farmers' practice & untreated plots than the treated plots. Healthy cabbage yield was also significantly higher in the treated plots than the farmers' practice plots & untreated plots. The differences in infestations among different planting time happened due to variation in temperature. Average temperature was within 18.1-22.0 DC during the head formation stage of December planting while it was 19.6-28.14 DC during the head formation stage of January planting. Due to low temperature the prevalence of DBM was very low in the December planting.
