Development of Bio-rational Based Integrated Management Package(s) for the Major Insect Pests of Cauliflower

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in the experimental field of Entomology Division, BARf, Gazipur during 2013-2014 to develop IPM packagers) for major insect pests of cauliflower grown under different planting dates. In October transplanting, curd infestation was the lowest (1.35%) in the IPM package 1, although there was no significant difference among the tested IPM packages. In November transplanting, IPM package 3 received lowest curd infestation(1.98%), although there was no significant difference among the tested IPM packages. In both plantings, IPM package 3 Hand Picking + parasitoids release + Spodoptera litura lures + Spinosad 45 SC) provided higher yield (17.93 t/ha and 12.25t/ha respectively) among the IPM treated plots.

Objectives:

To test the efficacy of several management approaches against pests.

Methodology:

This study was started from October 2013 in the experimental field of Entomology Division, BARI, Gazipur and continued till January 2014. The unit plot size was l Ox l Om and a distance of 200 m2 was maintained between the treatments plots and the untreated control plots. Cauliflower was transplanted twice, l " transplanting on 0I October 2013 2nd transplanting on 01 November 2013, which continued till 31 January 2014.There were five treatments and three replications and the experiment was set following RCB design. Five treatments were T₁= IPM package I (Hand picking + Sequential release of Trichogramma sp. and Bracon sp. for the control of leaf eating Caterpillars +Pheromone trapping for Spodoptera litura +Spraying of SNPV @ 0.2 g/ I of water at 7 days interval); T ₂ = IPM package 2 (Hand picking + Sequential release of Trichogramma sp. and Bracon sp. for the control of leaf eating Caterpillars +Pheromone trapping for Spodoptera litura +Spraying of Bt @ O.4g/l of water @ 7 days interval); T₃ = IPM package 3 (Hand picking + Sequential release of Trichogramma sp. and Bracon sp. for the control of leaf eating Caterpillars +Pheromone trapping for Spodoptera litura +Spraying of Spinosad @ O.4mlll of water @ 15 days interval); T₄= Farmers' practice: Spraying of Cypermethrin IOEC @ Imlll of water at 7 days interval; T₅= Untreated control. Numbers of healthy and infested curds were counted and recorded from randomly selected 2m2 area of each treatment replicates at 7 days interval. Treatment wise percent head infestation was calculated from the pooled data of twelve observations. Number of DBM and common cutworm larvae were counted and recorded from ten randomly selected heads at 07 days interval.

Achievement/Findings:

. The head infestation was 1.35- 1.98% in the IPM treated plots, no significant difference was among the IPM package but lowest infestation was observed in IPM package 1 which was 74.91 % less than the untreated control. While, significantly highest yield (l7.93t1ha) was recorded from IPM package 3 followed by IPM Package 2 and 1. The number of Spodoptera caught per weak per trap was 8.44 . But in November 2013 transplanting where head infestation was 1.98-2.79% among the IPM plots, which were significantly differed from control as well as farmers' practice treatments. The lowest infestation was observed in IPM package 3 which was 83.85 % less than the untreated control. The number of Spodoptera caught per weak per trap was 3.96 .
