Development of Alternate Cropping Pattern Potato/aroid (mukhikachu)–t.aman Against Potato–boro–t.aman Cropping Pattern in the Level BARInd Tract of Rangpur Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field trial was conducted in the farmers’ field at MLT site, Khalashpir, Pirgonj (drought prone area), Rangpur during 2013-14 to evaluate the performance of Potato/Aroid-T.Aman against Potato-Boro-T.Aman rice for saving water and increase profit. In the developed cropping pattern, yields of potato, aroid and T.Aman were 23.73, 18.46 and 4.87t ha^-1, respectively. In the existing cropping pattern, yields of potato, boro and T.Aman rice were 19.65, 4.21and 4.59 t ha^-1, respectively. The alternate cropping pattern gave higher rice equivalent yield (30.10 t ha^-1) than that of existing one (20.94 t ha^-1). Gross return and gross margin were higher in developed cropping pattern over existing one.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of Potato/Aroid-T.Aman rice against Potato-Boro-T.Aman rice.

Methodology:

The trial was conducted at MLT site, Khalashpir, Pirgong, Rangpur during 2013-14. Crop varieties viz. Asterix for potato, Meherpuri for Mukhikachu and BRRI dhan49 for T.Aman rice in alternate pattern, whereas Asterix for potato, BRRI dhan28 for Boro rice and BR11 for T.Aman rice was tested in existing cropping. The trial was conducted in RCB design with 6 dispersed replications. Potato seed was sown on 28 November in case of improved pattern and 1st December in existing pattern with a spacing of 60 cm x 25 cm. Harvesting was done 91 DAS and 88 DAS, respectively. Land was treated with Furadan before potato sowing in the field. All the fertilizers were used as basal except half of urea which was top dressed before earthing up. The first irrigation was applied at 18 days after planting and then 2nd and 3rd was applied at 35 and 52 days after planting. In improved pattern aroid was relayed on 16 January and total crop duration was 174 days. Full dose of MoP with half urea added in the field at 60 DAS. Rest of the urea applied as split at 75 DAS in the field. In existing pattern Boro seedling of 35 days were transplanted on 2 March and harvesting was done on 30 June 2014. Twenty five days old seedlings of T.Aman rice were transplanted on late July 2014 and were harvested in second week of November 2014. In rice the full amounts of TSP, two third of MoP and full Gypsum were applied broadcast and incorporated with soil during final land preparation. Rest amount of MoP was applied in 5-7 days before panicle initiation stage. Urea was applied in three equal splits at 10 days after transplanting, at rapid tiller stage and 5-7 days before panicle initiation stage.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering rice equivalent yield and economic return, the alternate cropping pattern potato/mukhikathu-T.Aman rice might be profitable to cultivate by the farmers in Rangpur region.
