Performance of Some Mango Cultivars Grown at Jessore

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Performance of twelve cultivars of mango viz., Badshabhog, Barababu, Bhabani, Bishwanath, Brindabani, Fazli, Gooti, Himsagar, Jalibum, Kohitur, Khirsapat and Mohanbhog were studied at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jessore during 1995. Grafts of these cultivars were planted in the field on 8 October, 1988. Tree volume was maximum in Gooti (142.95 m³) closely followed by Himsagar (136.04 m³) and Badshabhog (134.02 m³), and minimum in Jalibum (19.61 m³). Kohitur produced maximum number of fruits per tree (521) closely followed by Brindabani (504) while the highest yield per tree was obtained from Bishwanath (80.5 kg) followed by Fazli (59.0 kg), Kohitur (57.5 kg), Brindabani (56.5 kg) and Mohanbhog (50.5 kg). Brindabani had much fibre in pulp while the others had scanty to medium fibre. Individual fruit weight was maximum in Mohanbhog (607 g) followed by Fazli (469 g), and minimum in Brindabani (117 g). The highest and lowest pulp content were recorded in Fazli (77.70%) and Brindabani (50.34%), respectively. Total soluble solids content was the highest in Bhabani (22.51 %) and the lowest in Badshabhog (15.50%). Considering the overall performances of the cultivars, Bishwanath, Fazli and Mohanbhog were found to be superior for growing under the climatic condition of Jessore.

Objectives:

To investigate into the physico-chemical characteristics along with growth and yield potentiality of some popular and recommended varieties of mango

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jessore during January to June, 1995. The cultivars included in this study were Badshabhog, Barababu, Bhabani, Bishwanath, Brindabani, Fazli, Gooti, Himsagar, Jalibum, Kohitur, Khirsapat and Mohanbhog. Grafts of these cultivars were planted in the field on 8 October, 1988. Planting distance was maintained 13 m in both ways. One tree of each cultivar was selected from an orchard plantation. The soil was silt loam which belonged to calcareous brown flood plain soil having pH 7.5. The trees were fertilized twice a year as per recommendation. Two full cover spray applications with Ripcord 10 EC @ 1 ml and Dithane M-45 @ 2g per litre of water with the help of power sprayer, first at flower bud emergence and the second at pea stage of fruit were done to control mango hoppers and anthracnose. Weeding, spading, irrigation and other cultural operations were done as needed. Plant growth, yield, and qualitative and quantitative aspects of fruits were recorded from each plant. Girth of the trunk was measured at a height of 15 cm from ground level and tree volume was calculated by using the following formula of Castle with slight modification. Tree volume = 1/6πx height x (2r)², Where, 2r = (north-south + east-west spread)/2. Ten well matured fruits were collected at random from each plant and kept in the laboratory desk at room temperature for recording physico-chemical characteristics. The data were recorded at full ripen stage.
