Year-round Monitoring of Insect-pests in Protective Hydroponic Culture

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Insect-pests in protective hydroponic culture was monitored during both winter and summer seasons of 2013-14 at Horticulture Research Centre of BAR/, Gazipur. The overall insect population was low during both seasons. Results revealed that capsicum was the most susceptible to insect pests attack and 6 different insect species were Jound to insest capsicum in both the seasons. In summer, red mite in capsicum, Mealy bug in summer tomao and fruit fly in bitter gourd assumed the status oj major pests. While in winter, red mite in capsicum and fruit fly in bitter gourd appeared as major pests.

Objectives:

The present study was under taken to document the insect pests in hydroponic culture.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in the hydroponic glasshouse and poly-tunnel shade at Horticulture Research Centre of BARI, Gazipur during February-September 2013 and October 2013 to January 2014 at both summer and winter seasons. During summer (February to September 2013), four crops viz. off-season lettuce, off-season capsicum, summer tomato and green-chilli were grown and observed. On the other hand, during winter (October 2013 to January 2014), seven crops viz. Capsicum, bottle gourd, tomato, cucumber, lettuce, bitter gourd, and green-chilli were grown and observed for documenting insect pests. During the study period various insect pests attacking the crops were observed visually through regular monitoring and counting and continued up to the crop harvest.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest no. of (6) insect species were documented in capsicum followed by cucumber (3), tomato (2), and bitter gourd (2). No insect pests were observed and documented in lettuce. Among the insect species red mite in capsicum, fruit fly in bitter gourd appeared as major pest. Rest of the insect species recorded other crops were of minor importance. From the observation it could be concluded that insect pests in hydroponic culture under protective cultivation were not much alarming at present compared to field condition. But still few pests are limiting factors for cultivating crops under this system.
