Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Several management packages were evaluated against potato cutworm at three different locations, viz. Gazipur, Bogra and Munshigonj during 2013-14. The results indicated that management package involving Sex pheromone traps + application of Furadan 5G during land preparation + application of Furadan 5G before last irrigation offered significantly the lowest tubber damage and provided the highest yield in all the studied locations. However the highest benifit cost ratio(8.97) was obtained from management package comprising of application of Furadan 5G during land preparation + application of Furadan 5G before last irrigation.

Objectives:

To find out alternative control measures and develop a management package and to reduce the application of insecticides for controlling potato cutworm.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at three locations namely Gazipur, Bogra and Munshigonj. The experiment was set at November 2013 and laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The unit plot size was 3m x 3m maintaining spacing 60cm x 25cm. Fertilizers were used at per recommended doses. Irrigation was given recommended doses. Six treatments were followed with untreated control as: T₁ = Sex pheromone mass trapping started at 15 DAP till to harvest. T₂ = T₁ + Furadan 5G (Carbofuran) @ 20kglha during land preparation. T₃= T₁+ Furadan 5G (Carbofuran) @ 20kg/ha before last irrigation. T₄ = Sex pheromone mass trapping started at 15 DAP till to harvest + Furadan 5G (Carbofuran) @ 20kg/ha during land preparation + Furadan 5G (Carbofuran) @ 20kglha before last irrigation. T, = Furadan 5G (Carbofuran) @ 20kglha during land preparation + Furadan 5G (Carbofuran) @ 20kglha before last irrigation. T₆ = Farmer's practice: at Joydebpur location- Furadan 5G (Carbofuran) @ 20kglha during land preparation and urea topdressing. At Bogra location- Furadan 5G (Carbofuran) @ 20kg/ha during land preparation + Morter 48 EC(Chlorpyriphos 48EC)@ 2mlIL of water, three times spray at 10 days interval. At Munshigonj location- Furadan 5G (Carbofuran) @ 20kg/ha during land preparation and T₇ = Untreated control. Percent of hill damage (collected at the interval of 2 days, 3 days and 7 days after the application of treatments.). Number of potato cutworm moth population after 7 days interval. The crop was harvested on March 3, 2014. After harvest data on the percent of tuber damage and healthy tuber number and weight and yield of tuber were collected and analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Though T₄treatment showed the highest yield and the least damage tuber but that was statistically similar to T₅treatment among the three locations. On the other hand, in economic analysis the BCR was more in T₅ treatment than T_4. Therefore, from the results of the present study, it may be concluded that T₅(Furadan 5G during land preparation + Furadan 5G before last irrigation) may control the pest throughout the crop season effectively and economically.
