Screening of Different Sweet Potato Varieties / Lines Against Sweet Potato Weevil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The susceptibility of twelve sweet potato varieties/lines was evaluated against sweet potato weevil at RARS Barishal, ARS Bogra and TCRC Gazipur during 2013-2014 with the aim to screen weevil resistant/tolerant sweet potato varieties/ lines. From the result it was revealed that, BARl SP9 gave significantly highest yield (22.10 ton/ha) but it is the most susceptible to weevil infestation (28.64% root infestation by weight). On the other hand, BARl SP7 (yield 16.91 ton/ha and 8.39% root infestation by weight) and BARl SP 8 (yield 18.04 ton/ha and 9.44% root infestation by weight) showed better performance which may be used as moderately weevil resistant varieties. Considering interaction effect of treatments and locations, the lowest root infestation both by number and weight(l.21 % and 1.33% , respectively) was recorded from Bogra with BARl SP 7.

Objectives:

To screen weevil resistant / tolerant sweet potato varieties/ lines.

Methodology:

Twelve sweet potato varieties/lines (BARI SP 1-9, hybrid clone (H2/08), CIP 441132 and a local variety) were examined during 2013-14 at RARS Barishal, ARS Bogra and TCRC Gazipur to determine the effect of weevil infestation on yield. The spacing between plants was 30 em and rows 60 em. All plantings were from vine cuttings, and standard horticultural procedures were followed. Design was RCBD with three replications. The sweet potatoes were harvested 135 days after planting. Data were recorded on number and weight of healthy roots, infested roots and total roots in each plot. The roots in each plot were weighed and evaluated for severity of weevil damage. The percentage of infested roots in each varieties/lines was determined. The status of experiments was second year. Data were statistically analyzed in Mstat program and means were separated by DMRT.
