Effect of Different Non-chemical and Chemical Management Methods Against Sweet Potato Weevil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Studies were conducted at TCRC, BARl, Gazipur, RARS Barishal and ARS Bogra during 2013-14 to find out a bio-rational based mangement aproach against sweet potato weevil. Results indicated that, three treatments i.e. T₁ (Pheromone traps from CIP), T₂ (Pheromone traps from lspahani) and T₄(Hilling up the soil around the roots) performed best in terms of lowest weevil infestation and highest yield. These three treatments offered statistcal/y identical root infestation and yield. However, highest (93.2%) reduction of root infestation (by weight) over control was obtainedfrom pheromone traps from Ispahani

Objectives:

To find out a bio-rational based mangement aproach against sweet potato weevil

Methodology:

Studies were conducted at TCRC Gazipur, RARS Barishal and ARS Bogra during 2013-14 to find out a bio-rational based mangement aproach against sweet potato weevil. The experiment comprising seven treatments were replicated thrice following RCBD. The treatments were assigned as follows: T₁ Pheromone traps (CIP) use at vegetative stage till harvest; T_2: Pheromone traps (Ispahani) use at vegetative stage till harvest; T₃: Apply neem oil cake @lkg/plot at land preparation and spray Bioneem 0.3 EC (Azadirachtin ) @ 2ml /L water at IS days interval; T₄: Hilling up the soil around the roots and fill up the soil cracks at 15 days interval; T₅ Apply Carbofuran 5G @ 15kg/ha at land preparation and 45 days after sowing with irrigation; T_6: Vine dipping in diazinon 60 EC @ 2.5 ml /L water at 20 minutes before planting and spray diazinon 60 EC @ 2.5 milL water at 15 days interval, T₇: Untreated control. All planting were from vine cuttings, and standard horticultural procedures were followed. The spacing between plants was 30 ern and rows 60cm. The plot size for each treatment was 3 m2 x 3 m2. The roots in each plot were count and weighed and evaluated for severity of weevil damage. The percentage of infested roots in each plot was determined. Data were statistically analyzed in Mstat program and means were separated by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

Results indicated that, three treatments i.e,T_{i (}Pheromone traps from CIP), T₂ ( Pheromone traps from Ispahani) and T₄ (Hilling up the soilaround the roots) performed best in terms of lowest weevil infestation and highest yield. The results also revealed that pheromone traps (both CIP and Ispahani) and hilling up the soil were given better performance against weevil infestation in all locations. So these treatments would be preferably used for management of sweet potato weevil infestation.
