Development of Alternate Cropping Pattern Potato + Maize (as Intercrop)-jute-t.aman Against the Existing Cropping Pattern Potato+cucumber-t.aman

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the MLT site Madhupur, Tangail during 2012-13 and 2013-14 under AEZ-9 to improve the cropping productivity by introducing new crops and crop varieties as thus higher yield and economic return to the farmers. Alternate cropping pattern Potato + Maize - Jute- T.Aman was tested against the existing pattern Potato + Cucumber - T.Aman using RCB design with six dispersed replications. The alternate cropping pattern gave higher gross margin of Tk.3,86,218 ha^-1 compared to the existing pattern which was calculated to be Tk. 2,64,034 ha^-1

Objectives:

To verify scope of improving productivity by switching over from the existing cropping pattern

To introduce new crops and crop varieties in improved pattern for higher yield and economic return of the farmers.

Methodology:

The alternate cropping pattern(FA): Potato (Diamant) + Maize (BARI Hybrid Maize-7) - Jute (0-9897) - T.Aman (BRRI dhan-49) was tested against existing pattern (F): Potato (Diamant) + Cucumber (Hybrid) - T.Aman (Pajam) at the MLT site, Madhupur, Tangail during 2012-13 and 2013-14 in the medium highland under AEZ 9. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with six dispersed replications. The average plot size was 800 m². Recommended fertilizer packages (FRG, 2012) and the standard application methods were used for all the crops. Irrigation, pest management and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Rice equivalent yield for both the cropping pattern was calculated on the basis of prevailing market price of individual crops (Verma and Modgal, 1983). The cost and return analysis also calculated on the basis of prevailing market price of the inputs and outputs (produces). Crop cut was done from an area of 2m² at three spots from each plot for measuring yield.

Achievement/Findings:

The alternate cropping pattern (Potato+Maize-Jute-T.Aman) was found suitable and profitable than the farmers’ existing cropping pattern of Potato+Cucumber-T.Aman. This technology might be suggested for wider extension in similar extrapolation areas.
