Assessment of Varietal Susceptibility, Pest Status and Management of Red Banded Caterpillar in Mango

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at Fruit Farm, Horticulture Research Centre, BARl, Gazipur for assessing varietal susceptibility, pest status and developing management approach(es) against red banded caterpillar in mango during 2013-14 cropping seasons. Among seven varieties, Langra was most susceptible (7.93% fruit infestation) to red banded caterpillar followed by BARl Aam-3 (5.35% fruit infestation). BARl Aam-1 (2.33% fruit infestation), BARl Aam-8 (2.93% fruit infestation) and BARl Aam-2 (2.98% fruit infestation) was relatively resistant while BARl Aam-4 (4.88% fruit infestation) and Khirsapat (4.74% fruit infestation) showed moderate susceptibility to the pest. The peak infestation of red banded mango caterpillar was observed in last week of April (5.50% fruit infestation). Spraying of ProfenofosQ+Cypermethrin (Shobicron 425EC)+clean cultivation offered the lowest fruit infestation(5.38%)which was statistically at par with Flubendiamide(Belt 24WG)+ clean cultivation treated plots(5.42%). However, the highest yield increase over control (89.27%) as well as highest benefit cost ratio (3.12) was obtained from Flubendiamide (Belt 24WG) + clean cultivation.

Objectives:

To assess the varietal susceptibility, identify the critical time of infestation and effective management strategies

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Fruit Farm, Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur, Bangladesh during March to June 2014. The incidence of red banded caterpillar and peak time for infestation was monitored in BARI Aam-l, BARI Aam-2, BARI Aam-3, BARI Aam-4, BAR! Aam- 8, Langra and Khirsapat through counting from four fruiting branches of each quadrate. The efficacy of different control measures against red banded mango caterpillar was evaluated only on Langra variety following Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Five treatments were used in experiment viz. T_I = Clean cultivation (including cleaning of dead branches, leaves, debris and weeds (CC), T₂ = Spraying of ProfenofosQ+Cypermethrin (Shobicron 425EC)@ 1.0mVL of water at 15 days interval starting from marble stage of fruit+CC, T₃ = Spraying of Chlorantraniliprole+Thiamethoxam (Voliam flexi 300SC) @ 0.50mllL of water at 15 days interval starting from marble stage of fruit+CC, T₄ = Spraying of Flubendiamide (Belt 24WG) @ 0.5g!L of water at 10 days interval starting from marble stage of fruit+CC and T, = Untreated control (without any interventions). Insecticides sprays were conducted in morning with the help of power pump sprayer. The number of healthy and infested fruits was counted during data collection. Total number of fruits per plant and infested fruit per plant was counted in-situ and per cent infestation was calculated. Data on incidence pattern of RBMC were recorded from non sprayed mango plants. The data recorded on different parameters were analyzed statistically after necessary transformations by using MSTAT-C software. ANOVA was made by F variance test and the differences between treatment means were compared by DMRT (Gomez and Gomez, 1984). Marginal benefit cost ratio was calculated following Islam and Karim (1991).

Achievement/Findings:

The lowest infestation was recorded in BARI Aam-I (2.33%) followed by BARI Aam-8 (2.93%) and BARI Aam-2 (2.98%). On the other hand, the highest infestation was observed in Langra (7.93%) followed by BARI Aam-3 (5.35%), BARI Aam-4 (4.88%) and Khirsapat (4.76%). This variation might be due to early or lateness of mango varieties. From the results, it is revealed that late varieties are more susceptible up to certain level to red banded mango caterpillar Incidence of red banded caterpillar in different period of the seasons on different mango varieties showed a remarkable variation during study period from mid February to last June, 2014. From the figure, it was observed that first infestation was noticed during March 15, 2014 which was gradually increased to 7.55% in the month of April 30, 2014.
