Comparative Performance of Polyethylene Bagging and Nylon Netting in Controlling Banana Leaf and Fruit Beetle

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field trial was conducted at farmers' field of Kapasia, Gazipur and Gobindagonj, Gaibandha during May to August 2013 to observe the performance of polyethylene bagging and nylon netting in controlling banana leaf and fruit beetle. Both polyethylene bagging and nylon netting showed best performance in comparison to farmers' practice (insecticide spraying) and untreated control treatments. The results indicated that, lowest fruit infestation (3.91% and 4.57% in Kapasia and Gobindaganj, respectively) was recorded in polyethylene bagging treatment which was statistically similar with nylon netting treatment (4.74 and 5.07% in Kapasia and Gobindaganj, respectively). Pooled data of two locations revealed that, the highest benefit cost ratio (BCR) was obtained from polyethylene bagging (1.73) which was closely followed by nylon netting (1.44).

Objectives:

To find out safe and environment friendly means to control pest.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the farmers' field of Kapasia of Gazipur and Gobindagonj of Gaibandha districts. Farmers' fields were selected on the basis of orchard size, having at least 200 banana plants. A total of 6 demonstration trials were set (three demonstration trials in each upazilla) in the experimental sites. There were four treatments. Those were: T₁= Bunch covered with perforated (30- 40) poly bag @ l/bunch; T₂= Bunch covered with Nylon net (16 mesh) @ l/bunch; T₃= Farmers' practice (only spraying of insecticides) and T₄= Untreated control. Design of the study was randomized complete block design with three replications. The study was started by May and continued up to August, 2013. The demonstration trials were done on "Amritshagar" and "Champa" variety of banana. Number of plant per hectare was 2,500. Data on healthy and infested fruits at harvest, market price, costs of pest management, farmers' opinion and weather data were collected. The collected data and information was compiled, analyzed following Prodhan and Noman (2011), marginal benefit cost was analysis following Islam and Karim (1991). The means were separated using LSD test (P=0.05).

Economic analysis showed significant variations among different treatments. Pooled data of two locations revealed that, the highest benefit cost ratio (BCR) was offered by polybag (1.73) which was closely followed by nylon net bagging (1.44. Prodhan and Noman (2012) had the similar result with poly bag and Khorsheduzzaman and Nessa (2013) had the similar results with nylon net. It is therefore, concluded that both poly bag and nylon net were almost equally effective in controlling banana leaf and fruit beetle in the field.
