Total and Dtpa-extractable Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn Contents in Some Soils of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Thirty soil samples representing different parent materials of Bangladesh were studied for the distribution of total and DTPA- extractable zinc, copper, manganese and iron in the surface horizons. Total content of micronutrients in these soils was moderate to high and their content decreased from the younger to the older soils. But the total quantity of the above nutrients showed little variation in soils developed on similar parent materials. On the basis of DTPA-extractable micronutrients, zinc deficiency was widespread (13 out of 30 soils) in these soils, whereas the quantities of iron, manganese and copper were adequate. The DTP A-extractable zinc, copper, manganese and iron showed high correlations with their total amounts, indicating a genetic relationship of these soils with zinc, copper, manganese and iron.

Objectives:

To assess the distribution of total and available contents of Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn in some agriculturally important soils of Bangladesh developed on different parent materials, and
To discuss the relationships between the total and available contents of these nutrient elements.

Methodology:

Soil samples from the surface horizons of thirty soil series developed on six major parent material groups were used for the analysis of micronutrient cations (Zn, Cu, Mn and Fe) along with some other relevant properties. Some important soil properties and the classification (Soil Survey Staff 1975) of the soils analysed for this investigation. Prior to analysis, the soils were air-dried, ground and sieved through 100 mesh screen. The soils were analysed for the different constituents by the usual well known methods. Total contents of Fe, Mu, Cu and Zn were determined following the procedure of Cottenic et. al. (1982). DTPA-CaCI₂ extractant was used for the estimation of available Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn (Lindsay & Norvell 1978) with the help of an atomic absorption spectrophotometer (Parkin-Elmer 5000).

Achievement/Findings:

The availability of Zn in the terrace soils' higher than that in the floodplain soils. They also observed that the formed from basalt had higher values of Cu those of coastal plains which had the least a DTPA-extractable Cu ranged from 1.0 to 14.2 mg kg^-1 soil. The minimum content of total Mn was found in Kaptai series of hill soils and maximum in Kalma series of terrace soils. The minimum content of DTPA-exractable Mn was observed in the soils of Mlandaha series and maximum in those of Barisal series and were within the reported values in similar soils elsewhere (Prasad & Sahi 1989); The average content of total Fe in the terrace soils was higher than that in the floodplain and hill soils. Among the terrace soils Chandra series recorded high value of total Fe. The minimum content of available Fe was observed in the Dhamrai series of floodplain soils and maximum in the Chandra series of terrace soils. Prolonged submergence coupled with reducing conditions are reported to be the reasons for higher available Fe. The DTPA-Fe was significantly correlated with its total amount (r = 0.83) indicating thereby a genetic richness of these soils in Fe. All the soils have sufficient quantity of available Fe considering 4.5 mg kg^-1 soil as the threshold value of DTPA-extractable iron.
