Fertility Status and Productivity Potential of Some Benchmark Soils of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Five soil profiles representing five major soil series from the floodplains of Bangladesh were studied to evaluate their fertility status. The nutrient contents of these soils have been reported. With respect to nutrient status, the soils are classed as fertile with reasonably high production potentiality which is renewed every year because of siltation during the monsoon season.

Objectives:

Objective of the study was to assess the distribution of total and available contents of nutrient elements in some agriculturally important soils of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Five soil series which were considered as some of the benchmark soils of Bangladesh had been selected for this study. The names of these soil series were Barisal, Ghior, Gangachara, Sonatala and Ghatail and their respective parent materials were Ganges tidal alluvium, Ganges river alluvium, Tista river alluvium, Brahmaputra alluvium. Pits were dug in the selected sites and soil samples were collected on natural horizon basis. The soil samples were processed and analysed in the laboratory for total and available N, P and K using standard procedures. Total quantities of iron, manganese, copper and zinc in soils were determined in their Na₂CO₃ fusion extract. The available quantities of iron, manganese, copper and zinc in these soils were extracted with DTPA-CaCl₂ reagent (Lindsay & Norvell 1978), The above elements in the extract were determined with the help of an atomic absorption spectrophotometer.

Achievement/Findings:

From the above studied it is summarized that the present soils are fertile with reasonably high productive potentiality and it renewed every year by fresh siltation during in the monsoon season.
