Selection of Rice Varieties for Specific Location in Boro Season: GIS Approach

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted to identify and delineate geographical areas suitable for different rice genotypes, namely, BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan36 and BRRI hybrid dhan1 during Boro season of 2003. The characterization tool of AWhere ACT software (Mudspring Geographers,USA, 2002) was used. From the investigation, the southwestern and northern parts of Bangladesh appeared to be equally suitable for cultivation of all the tested varieties. All those varieties gave higher grain yield in medium high and medium low lands having clay to loamy textured soil. The most suitable areas were estimated as 49, 64, 47 and 25% of total Boro areas for BRRI dhan28, BRRl dhan29, BRRl dhan36 and BRRl hybrid dhan1 respectively

Objectives:

To select rice varieties suitable for specific locations using GIS technique

Methodology:

The study was carried out in 30 sites of 29 upazilas of Bangladesh during the Boro season 2003. BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan36 and BRRI hybrid dhan1 were grown under Seed Production and Distribution Program (SPDP). A total of 110 trial plots were used for the purpose. The coordinate values of the trial plots were recorded using Geographical Positioning System (GPS) during June-August, 2003. Soil physical properties considered in this study were land type, permeability, slope, salinity of topsoil obtained from the database of BCA. AWhere ACT software (Mudspring Geographers, 2002) which however is not a complete GIS. But it is a dynamic characterization tools to provide non-GIS Specialist, particularly in the field of agriculture and natural resource management, with accessible, practical and cutting-edge special information tools. The characterization tool of AWhere ACT was first used for identification of soil parameters of high, medium and low yield locations for all the tested genotypes. Grain yield of each variety greater than on station yield (Adhunik Dhaner Chash, 2003) was designated as high yield. Medium yield was defined when it was 1 t/ha less than high yield and low yield when 1 t/ha less than medium yield. For each variety, all values of a particular soil parameter at high yield locations formed the class of values for that parameter for high yield of that variety. Similar approach was followed to determine class of values of other soil parameters. Same procedure was used to determine class of values of soil parameters for medium and low yield of the variety. The AEZ (BARC, 2001) database of BCA version 1.0 was used for classification. All trial plots were in non-saline areas. So, it was not considered in the characterization. Again, the trial plots were located in plain lands and hence the value of slope assigned was <3% of soil map. The characteristics tool of AWhere ACT was used to produce maps showing suitable (high yield), moderately suitable (medium yield) and less suitable (low yield) areas for each variety.

Maps of suitable areas were produced for growing the varieties BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan36 and BRRI hybrid dhan1. The southwestern and northern parts of the country appeared to be equally suitable for cultivation of all the tested varieties and the advance line. All tested genotypes gave higher grain yield in medium high and medium low lands having clay to loamy textured soil mostly in medium high to medium low land with slow to moderately rapid permeability. The most suitable areas were estimated to be 49, 64 and 47% of total Boro areas for BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan36 respectively. About 25% of the total Boro area was found to be suitable for BRRI hybrid dhan1.
