Genotype-environment Interaction and Stability of Yield in Rainfed Lowland Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The stability and adaptation of seven rainfed lowland rice (RLR) varieties/lines (Genotypes) were examined by the use of grain yields (t/ha), grown in replicated trials for three consecutive years at three locations of Bangladesh. The Comilia site had the most favourable environment followed by Rajshahi and Gazipur. All the genotypes, including BR11 were found unstable after the description of Eberhart and Russell (1966). This problem was minimized when the 'b' value was applied to measure the stability and adaptation after Finlay and Wilkinson (1963). Then BR850-22-1-1, BR1867-20-1-4, BR11, and BR22 obtained average stability with general adaptation when BR1870-89-1-1 was poorly adapted to all environments. BR23 showed environmental responsiveness (below average stability) and specifically adapted to favourable environments. BR1725-13-7-1-6 was identified to be the most promising line because it had greater resistance to environmental changes (above average stability), suggesting its suitability for unfavourable ecosyatem.

Objectives:

To evaluate some elite breeding lines of rainfed lowland rice (RLR) ecosystems for grain yield stability and adaptability

Methodology:

Seven advanced breeding lines/varieties were grown at Gazipur and at two BRRI regional stations namely, Comilla, and Rajshahi during 1988-1990 transplant aman seasons. Each location in a given year was considered as an individual environment. Thus, there were 9 environments. The trials were laid out in a RCBD with three replications in all the years in each site. Each experimental plot consisted of 5.4 m long 12 rows spaced at 25 cm and 15 cm between rows and between hills within rows. Thirty day old seedlings were transplanted between 10 and 15 August using 2-3 seedlings/hill and the fields were fertilized with 60-40-40 kg NPK/ha with usual two equal splits of N, one at basal along with all P and K and the other half at 30 days after transplanting. The crop was grown in rainfed lowland condition giving the usual crop management for all trials. The whole plots were harvested at maturity and the yield per plot was converted to tons per hectare at 14.0% moisture level. The stability parameters, i.e (a) the regression coefficient (b) and deviation from regression (S²d) were calculated after Eberhart and Russell (1966).
