Wild Edible Vegetables Used by the Chakma Community of Rangamati Hill District Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study deals with identification, documentation and exploration of wild edible vegetables used by the ethinic community of Rangamati Hill District, Bangladesh. Local people use leaves, stem, flowers, tuber, fruits, shoots and roots as a part of their daily diet. Data were collected from the Chakma tribal people through frequent field visits, PRA and questionnaire survey in the area of Kutubchari, Badalchari, Duluchari and Nirbanpur Bihar areas of the Rangamati district. Extensive interviews were done and markets were surveyed regarding availability of wild plants,information of their uses, including parts used, mode of preparation etc.Study revealed composition of 49 species under 29 families. All plants were arranged alphabetically in the tabular form followed by their scientific name, families, chakma names, habit, plant parts used and the mode of usage.

Objectives:

To document the indigenous knowledge on various wild edible vegetable plants used by the Chakma community in the Rangamati Hill District.

Methodology:

Rangamati is 77 km from the Chittagong district town. It is a combination of Hill - Lake and Plain land. Different ethnic communities live over there; of which Chakma is the dominant. They collects and takes a lot of vegetables from the nature and many of those are wild varieties. As such, to fulfill the objectives, data were collected from the Chakma tribal people through frequent field visits, participatory rural appraisal and questionnaire survey in the area of Kutubchari, Badalchari, Duluchari and Nirbanpur Bihar areas in the Rangamati district. Extensive interviews were done and markets were surveyed regarding availability of wild plants,information of their uses, including parts used, mode of preparation etc. Further, interviews were conducted with the villagers; men and women. Market survey was done at Rangamati main town at Bonorupa, Ghagra and Kutubchari bazar by visiting weekly market hat and observations were recorded on the wild plants. Various wild edible plants were brought to the laboratory and herbarium specimens were prepared. Plant Specimens were deposited in the Bangladesh Forest Research Institute herbarium, Chittagong. Plants were identified using relevant scientific literature and matching with the specimens available at the Bangladesh Forest Research Institute, herbarium. Wild edible vegetables plants use as food by the Chakma tribal peoples of Rangamati were sorted under the respective families and arranged alphabetically. The data were provided giving scientific name, family, chakma name, habits, portion used and the mode of usage.

Achievement/Findings:

The findings of the present study indicated that, wild edible plants are closely linked with the socio-economic condition of the tribal communities of Rangamati for their day to day requirements. Over exploitation of wild edibles might cause threat to certain species, it was observed. Utilization of wild edible plants could be an effective tool for preservation and restoration of indigneous knowledge system inherent in chakma people. The outcome of such studies would be useful in (a) determining appropriate conservation strategy (b) development of agro - techniques of wild edible vegetables (c) Promotion of large scale cultivation of wild vegetables and (d) Bio-chemical analysis of wild vegetables to work out their nutrient value.
