Raising Seedlings of Calamus Viminalis and Their Performance After Out-planting

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The paper presents the method of raising seedlings of Calamus viminalis var. fasciculatus and their performance after planting out. Germination percent of C. viminalis was 24.37. Sunlight was pre-requisite for the germination. Optimum time for seedling pricking from the seed bed to the polybag was 90 days after germination and this way 100% survival could be obtained. A survival of 98% was observed in the wildings when they were transferred from the field to the polybags at an average height of 8.5 cm. One year old wildings were significantly lower in height in the nursery than that of one year old polybag-raised seedlings. Survival of planted seedlings at Hinguli, Chittagong in the field was 77.5% after one year. Average height increment of the seedlings was 25.5 cm with usually 4-5 leaves one year following planting under a teak plantation.

Objectives:

a) To develop nursery raising and plantation technique of Calamus viminalis.

Methodology:

Fruits of C. Viminalis were collected from a natural forest of Kaptai, Chittagong Hill Tract. As it is a standard practice to remove fruit scale and fleshy sercotesta before seeds were sown. The clean seeds were obtained by rubbing and removing the scale and pulp. Seeds were sown in five nursery beds (1.4m x 1.2m) made of sandy soil, covered with a thin layer of mixture of soil and saw dust at 1:1 ratio. Each bed was sown with 4,000 seeds. Polythene sheet was provided over the bed to protect the seeds from displacement due to heavy shower. Germination was recorded separately from each bed at every 10 days interval. Pricking of germinated seedlings from the nursery bed to the poly bags (21 cm x 14 cm) containing a compost of soil and cow dung at 7:1 ratio was undertaken at 15 days interval to observe the optimal time of pricking following initiation of germination. Data on survival, increment of roots and shoots and number of leaves over a period of three months were collected. Growth of the seedlings in the poly bags for a period of one year was recorded. Wildings of age 2-3 months were also collected from the clumps located at Bangladesh Forest Research Institute campus and transplanted in the polybags. Subsequently, survival and growth of the wildings were compared with polybag-raised seedlings at nursery stages. A total of 500 seedlings raised in polybags from the seeds were out planted at Hinguli Research Station of BFRI, Chittagong at 4m x 4m spacing under 15 years old teak (Tectona grandis) plantation. Planting was carried out on the top of a hill with a gentle slope at an elevation of about 30m. Average rainfall of the area was about 3250 mm and average maximum and minimum temperature was 32.7⁰C and 18.7⁰C respectively. Soil texture was sandy-loam with a pH of 5.5. So, planting site was in an ideal place which meets the ecophysiological requirements of rattans as pointed out. Data on seedling survival and growth were recorded one year after planting in the field.

Achievement/Findings:

Germination percentage for Calamus viminalis is low. Causes need to be investigated. Studies should be undertaken to increase the germination rate by pre-treatment of seeds and use of different germination media. Sunlight is essential for germination of C. Viminalis. Delayed pricking of seedlings at 90 days after germination from nursery beds to polybags ensured no seedling mortality. Wildings transferred to polybags when 2-3 months old showed high survival. However, growth of wildings in the nursery was lower than that of seedlings. A seedling survival of 77.5% was noticed one year after planting under 15 years old teak plantation. Initial seedling growth was low.
