A field experiment was carried out to study the effect of foliar application of molybdenum on the yield of cauliflower (var. Snow White) at micronutrients experimental field of Soil Science Division of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARl), Joydebpur, Gazipur (AEZ-28). The experiment was designed in RCBD with 12 treatments. The micronutrients molybdenum (Mo) in the form of ammonium molybdate (NH4)6Mo7O242H2O) containing 54% of Mo was applied as foliar spray at three different stages of plant growth, i) 20 days after transplanting ii) 30 days after transplanting and iii) 45 days after transplanting. The treatment combinations of foliar spray of Mo were -T1: Mo - Control; T2: M1 (0.025 %), T3: M2 (0.05 %) T4: M3 (0.1 %). All parameters of cauliflower showed higher tendency in T3 treatments (0.05 % foliar application of molybdenum). But significant influenced was observed only in case of circumference, curd weight and curd yield. The highest curd weight (1.29kg) and curd yield (51.7 ton ha-1) was observed in T3 treatment. The lowest curd weight (0.98kg) and curd yield (40 ton ha-1) was observed in T1 treatment (control). Thus, foliar application of Mo on cauliflower is more effective for improving yield of cauliflower in the study area of Joydebpur, Gazipur(AEZ-28).

  1. To know the response of cauliflower to foliar application of molybdenum for higher yield,
  2. To find out the optimum dose of molybdenum for maximizing the yield of cauliflower.

A field experiment was carried out in the micronutrient experimental field of Soil Science Division of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Grey Terrace Soil, Joydebpur, Gazipur (AEZ 28) on 03 December 2013 to study the effect of foliar application of Mo on the yield of cauliflower. The experiment was designed in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 12 treatments. Equal sized, healthy cauliflower (var. Snow White) seedlings of 25 days were transplanted with a spacing of 60 em from line to line and 45 cm from plant to plant. Fertilizers were applied based on BARC fertilizer recommendation guide-2012. Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and Boric acid were used as a source of N, P, K, Sand B, respectively. Foliar application: To study the effect of Mo as foliar spray on growth, and yield of cauliflower Mo in the form of ammonium molybdate (NH4)6Mo7O242H2O) containing 54% of Mo were applied as foliar spray at following three different stages of plant growth. i) 20 days after transplanting ii) 30 days after transplanting iii) 45 days after transplanting. The treatment combinations of foliar spray of Mo were- T1: Mo - Control; T2: M1 (0.025 %), T3: M2 (0.05 %) T4: M3 (0.1 %). The volume of water 0.5 L plant-1 was estimated to wet completely the cauliflower plant. The spray solution was prepared on the basis of 25, 50, and 100 g of ammonium molybdate (NH4)6Mo7O242H2O) per hectare in 100 liters of water for 0.025, 0.05 and 0.1%, respectively (R. G. Weir, 2004). The time of foliar spray was 8:00 A.M. The crops were harvested on 19th February, 2014. Five plants from each plot were tagged randomly for collection of different plant characters such as plant height (cm), circumference and number of leaves/plant. Methods of chemical analysis: Initial soil samples collected from 0-15 cm depth prior to fertilizer application, were analyzed for all important soil parameters using standard procedures. The soil was found to be acidic. Standard methods were used in these determinations. Soil pH was measured by a combined glass calomel electrode (Jackson, 1958). Organic carbon was determined by the wet oxidation method (Walkley and Black). Total N was determined by a modified Kjeldahl method. Calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and K were determined by NH4OAc extractable method, copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn) were determined by DTPA extraction followed by AAS reading. Boron (B) was determined by CaCI2 extraction method. Available P was determined by the Bray and Kurtz method while S was determined using the turbidimetric method with BaCh.

The yield and curd of cauliflower plants receiving 0.05% foliar spray of Mo were enhanced than untreated plants. The study suggested that foliar application of Mo @ 0.05% may be recommended for improving yield of cauliflower. Foliar applications of Mo are often more effective, particularly for acid soils. This is first year experiment and should be continued to confirm the findings.
