Studies on Genotype Sowing Date Interaction of Soybean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

AN experiment was conducted during 1993 in the Experimental Farm of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Nine soybean genotypes/varieties were used and evaluated under six dates of sowing. Highly significant genotype-sowing date interaction effects were found for all the characters except 100-seed weight. Significant pooled deviation indicated the presence of considerable genetic diversity among the materials for plant height, pods per plant, 100-seed weight and yield. Stability analysis suggested that the genotypes were responsive and sensitive to the environmental changes. G-2 and G-2120 was stable for seed yield.

Objectives:

To evaluate the nature of genotype-date of sowing interaction (environment) including stability of soybean genotypes

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during 1993 in the Experimental Farm of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Nine soybean genotypes/varieties were used in the study. The experiment was laid in RCBD with three replications. Unit plot size was 4 m x 2.5 m. Spacing was 25 cm and 5 cm between rows and plants, respectively. Six sowing dates were 15^th June, 30^th June, 15^th July, 15^th November, 30^th November, 15^th December. Fertilizers and manures of the following recommended doses were used. TSP-65 kg/ha, MP-65 kg/ha, inoculum-20 kg/kg seed and organic manure 5 t/ha. During the land preparation, whole amount of well decomposed cowdung, Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) and Muriate of Potash (MP) were applied. Ten plants were randomly harvested from each plot for recording data on number of pods per plant, 100-seed weight, days to maturity and seed yield. The plot seed yield was converted into yield per hectare. The genotype sowing date interaction and stability analysis were done following the method suggested by Eberhart and Russel (1966).

Achievement/Findings:

The genotypes were found to be more adaptive than the variety MTD-2. Deviations from regression (S²di) of the six genotypes Shohag, G-2120, BAU-20, KHSB-2, BS-41 and Q-40 were significantly different from zero for grain yield. Results of these genotypes as to yield per hectare appeared to be unstable and seemed to behave inconsistently to environmental changes. The remaining genotypes viz. G-2, BS-11 and MTD-22 possessed non-significant S²di values and were found to be stable in environmental changes. Considering three stability parameters, G-2 was most stable for seed yield. The genotype G-2120 produced higher grain and was observed to be unstable under environmental variations.
