Determination of the Effect of Sowing Media on the Seed Germination of Calamus Guruba Ham.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out to determine the effect of four different sowing media viz. i) Three parts nursery soil: one part cow dung (T₁); ii) one part moist saw dust: one part fine sand (T₂); iii) Moist sawdust (T₃) and iv) Fine sand (T₄) on seed germination rates of Calamus guruba Ham. (Jali-bet). The results indicate that, in seed bed significantly higher germination percentages of seeds of C. guruba were obtained in T₂(87%) and T₃ (84%) as compared to that in fine sand (T₄) where germination percentage was 56. This might be due to high water retention capacity of the media. When earthen pots were used as container of the media, the germination percentage were 73, 84, 81 and 77 in T₁, T₂, T₃ and T₄respectively and variation was insignificant in that case.

Objectives:

a) To develop nursery raising technique of Calamus guruba.

Methodology:

Ripened fruits of C. guruba were collected from Hathazari area and then kept in open tray at nursery in shade for 24 hours, After about 10 days of collection the fruits were rubbed in a container to make the seeds free from scaly epicarp and fleshy sarcotesta. The seeds along with removed epicarp and sarcotesta were kept in tap water for 24 hours. After proper cleaning the seeds were mixed with ordinary ash before sowing. Four different sowing media (treatment) were used for the experiments. These were (i) 3 parts nursery soil (sandy loam): 1 part cowdung (T₁); (ii) 1 part moist sawdust: 1 part fine sand (T₂); (iii) Moist sawdust (T₃); and (iv) Fine sand (T₄). Seeds were taken at random from the stock for each treatment. For all treatments the seed bed as well as earthen pot was used. Each treatment had three replications of 30 seeds in each. Data on germination were recorded at weekly interval from the date of first sprouting and completed within 9 weeks. The results of the experiment were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Based upon the results of this experiment it is recommended that C. guruba seeds be germinated on a medium with equal amount of moist sawdust and fine sand or only moist sawdust in seed bed. When earthen pot is used all the four media tested in the experiment are recommended.
