Effect of Corm Size and Spacing on Yield of Olkachu

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted during 1999 to 2000 at the Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Jessore to find out the optimum seed size and spacing to achieve maximum yield of Olkachu. Seed corm sizes were 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 g and spacing were 60 x 45, 60 x 60, 75 x 45, 75 x 60 and 75 x 75 cm. Seed corm size influenced the yield and its characters. The maximum yield (58.38 t/ha in 1999 and 72.52 t/ha in 2000) were obtained by planting large size seed corm (1000 g). Closer spacing (60 x 45 cm) produced significantly higher yield in both the years. Economic analysis revealed that the highest gross margin (Tk.3,68,850.00) was obtained from 1000 g seed corm with 75 x 45 cm spacing. On the other hand, the highest marginal rate of return was observed in 200 g seed corm with 75 x 60 cm spacing. The result of the study indicated that, for higher yield of Satkhira local cultivar of Olkachu, the corm size should be as large as 1000 g following the closest spacing of 75 x 45 cm in Jessore region.

Objectives:

To find out the standard seed corm size and spacing for the cultivation of Olkachu.
To maximize yield of the crop for higher return

Methodology:

The experiment were conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Jessore, for two seasons from April to November 1999 and 2000. It was laid out in a RCBD with three replications. The treatments were assigned in factorial combinations of 5 sizes of seed viz. 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 g of the cultivar Satkhira local and 5 spacing viz., 60 x 45, 60 x 60, 75 x 45, 75 x 60 and 75 x 75 cm. The unit plot accommodating 16 plants per plot. The crop received 10 ton cow dung, 200 kg N, 100 kg P and 100 kg K/ha. Planting was done on 15 April 1999 and 20 April 2000 and harvested from 14 November 1999 and 20 November 2000. Periodical data were recorded on the number of plants germinated per plot, canopy size, plant height, number and girth of pseudo stem. Height was measured from the base of the pseudo stem to the highest point of the plant. Canopy size was measured by taking the average of canopy diameters in two directions, perpendicular to each other, three months after planting when the pseudo stem was fully appended. The girth near the base of the pseudo stem was also measured at this stage. Yield data were recorded at the time of harvesting. Data on yield and yield contributing characters were analyzed statistically and the treatment means were separated by DMRT (Steel and Torrie, 1980). The economic performance was also calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

It might be concluded that, seed corm of 1000 g weight with closer spacing (75 x 45 cm) gave the highest yield with maximum economic return. Therefore, to have the higher yield of Olkachu per unit area of land, the grower should use corm weighing near about 1000g following 75 x 45 cm spacing under the greater Jessore region.
